Alcohol at the Jr National Awards Dinner

this year will be my first bowling nationals and as part of the sheild team. i know that i was looking forward to the dinner just as much as bowling. i have seen photos of the night in previous years and it looks amazing. i think that having the presentation at dreamworld is a bad idea. especially because there are people who won't go on the rides at all. what are they suppossed to do??? stand around and watch? the rides just aren't the only thing though. but what else are we supposed to do for fun...it doesnt sound very exciting...

just my feelings. :(

I think this whole thing is totally ridiculous.

One thing: The "President Shield Ball" is supposed to be a fun event where everyone dresses up in FORMAL ATTIRE and has a dinner and a dance - pretty much a fun time being with other teams and catching up with friends.
I don't undertand why this event that is supposed to be formal is now suddenly change to something casual? I feel sorry for the people ageing out who want to dress up for their final ball. Almost everyone is dissapointed about this..

Im guessing there is no time to change the event? Even so, the teams shouldve been told about the attire long before two weeks prior to the event. Alot of people have spent money buying things FORMAL that arnt even needed anymore. I think people are a bit slack for not saying anything about this.

It is silly how we only have 2 1/2 hours to have rides, the presentation and "nibbles". What a load of crap. We got to have until midnight last year. You realise that many people will not get to go on the rides because of so many people there.? But so what about the rides, it shouldnt even really have anything to do with this.

Another dissapointed bowler. :(

ONLY 3 RIDES OPEN????
you have to be kidding!
i have only been to one president shield dinner dance
and that was last year
and it was awesome
good food
good music
good times
finish time...to memory...12ish??? maybe later
this year..
run around trying to get on 3 rides..
nibblies..
presentation..
home???
laura just suggested an after party ;p
i could go with that!
last night of being away should let us be out past our bed times!

i agree on the after party!!!
i have been to 2 shield dinners one as a actual shield bowler and this yr is my second yr bowling shield i was so cut when my manager told our team that it was casual dress not FORMAL LIKE IT HAS BEEN!!!!!!
i know the girls from southern have spent a bit of money on their dresses and wat not i personaly spent over $500 and that was the only time i'de be wearing it. the whoole point of the presidents shield ball is so we can dress up in our nice dresses have our hair done wear heels that alot of us can't walk in with our partner get photos have presentation eat dinner and then dance the rest of the night away last yr it finished a bit after 12 and most of us were still hyped up from the music and wat not, this yr we have 1hour of rides which are thrill rides and i personally am scared of fast rides or getting dunked in water and going upside down so i will be walking around with bec for that hour being bored out of our brains!!! if they had told us 2months ago i would probably be a bit better with it but the dinner is one of the main highlights of nationals for me other than bowling shield!! i just hope that next yr that get their buts into gear whoever organized this and have a proper dinner!!!

And I'm sure Barry will not be utterly thrilled about taking pictures of the teams in their bordi's, singlets, tank tops and jeans.
Finally someone with an irrefutable argument (the others are good too though)

Haven't these events been all about Barry for like ten years!?! :p

Jokes peeps, Barry and I go way back...

Question to TBA

You have made a monumental mistake. Are you going to remedy the problem that you have caused? Or are you going hide your heads in the sand and hope the problem goes away? It would be "nice" to get an answer, but it might be too hard to remove ones head out of the sand.

Dinner Dance.....

DEFINITION:

Dinner: Food/meal
Dance: Music
????????????????????????????????

Sooo wheres the Dinner and wheres the dance?

My Opinion is why is something as prestigious and formal as the dinner dance and awards night being treated like its some sort of beach party?!?!?! I mean like what happened?? What did everyone do to deserve something like this??? Personally I thinks it's embarassing not only for TBA, but for the state of queensland, besides what about the possibility of rain?? Or if it's freaking freezing?? And are you really getting your moneys worth?? These are some of my thoughts, whether you agree with me or not thats your decision but seriously, this is really turning into some kinda joke gone horribly wrong!!

Sean.

Has anyone actually sent their conerns to TBA, Gillian, John Coxon?

You can't assume they've read this thread, I'd suggest a concerened or interested party contacts them directly...

I think its a bit to late for TBA to change the event, they would have had to pay a deposit which was probably non refundable
But like Caz said where is the Dinner and dance now?
I myself is ageing out this yr and the one thing i was looking forward to was the ageing out circle at the end of the night but now it looks like there isnt going to be one of them which is a real disappointment because for my past 3 president shields i have watched my friends in that circle......

This is the information from the Junior Nationals tender requirements.

“Event Presentations
The Centre must be able to source a venue for up to 500 people for the President’s Shield Dinner and 200 people for the Welcome Dinner. Prices may not exceed $50 per person inclusive of all food, beverage (excluding alcohol), and venue hire and entertainment components. The dinner menu must be suitable for junior athletes and their carers and must be approved by the CEO prior to a formal commitment being made by any party associated with the event”

So one should ask the questions re seating, menu, music, dancing to AMF Mt Gravatt and then the TBA. the information had to be supplied with tender, several months ago.

The President’s Shield is the Holy Grail for Australian Juniors. “Its purpose is to foster, develop and advance good sportsmanship and fellowship amongst the representative teams taking part. It also is used to determine annually the best State/Territory/Zone representative teams of Junior Boys and Girls in Australia. It is limited to one team of Boys and one team of Girls representing the following areas of Australia: Australian Capital Territory, North Queensland, South Queensland, Northern New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and Northern Territory” (from the Southern NSW Website).
It is a shame that the cumulating presentation for this event is a 2 & ½ hour ‘beach party’.
What a Kodak moment for the victors – “Yeh, that’s me in the board shorts on the left – we were the best Junior team in Australia”.
As a parent of 2 bowlers, we have seen the commitment of the bowlers, Coaches and Managers, and the parents to get the Shield bowlers to this event. It is unsatisfactory to see that the dedication and commitment of THE TEAM is ‘recognised’ in such a manner.
The President’s Shield’s “purpose is to foster, develop and advance good sportsmanship and fellowship amongst the representative teams taking part. It also is used to determine annually the best State/Territory/Zone representative teams of Junior Boys and Girls in Australia.” (again plaigarised from Southern NSW website).
These bowlers deserve to be PRESENTED, ACKNOWLEDGED and RECOGNISED for their victory or participation. They (those who have posted comments) WANT to dress nicely, walk in and be presented, have dinner and have the awards; AND THEN FINALLY to be able to let their hair down and mingle, dance, meet the other teams and start friendships that hopefully will last many years.
It may be too late to change the arrangements for 2008, but for future hosts of this event – please remember the comments made and that it is a reasonable expectation that TIMELY notification of the event is made. ‘Timely notification’ is not 2 weeks prior to Nationals after significant money is outlaid for outfits that would be appropriate for past years BUT not for this year.

It is against the LAW to serve alcohol to under aged patrons.
LOL We had seven blokes in our 1992 team by the name of Kevin Redmond on Shield Ball night that year hahaha :D
Seriously though, this really cheapens what should be a very special night for these young kids and I feel very sorry for them.
They'll dance, they'll meet girls/guys, meet new hopefully lifelong friends, socialise and look damn good doing it - and that's what it's all about.
Why does everyone have to piss tradition down the drain these days? :(

It cheapens our sport and cheapens what should be a very special night for these kids.

I have had a great time at the presentation dinners that I have attended, as previous posts have emphasised, by now the bowlers have spent a lot of money on their outfits and have been looking forward to this for many months. My question is, is it compulsory for the teams to attend, or can they make there own arrangements, that would give them their moneys worth

Shield Teams: Pre payment of 18 tickets, $40.50 each.

The function has been organised so:
Don't wait for the event organiser to make things better
Get dressed up and enjoy the night
Ask some of the Queensland bowlers if they know somewhere to go afterwards for a few hours of dance/chat
Make sure you bring your own camera for the 'before ride photos'
Let the TBA know if you think the choice was not the best
The bowlers can give the night the credibility it deserves by their actions
Let's bowl

As a mum of a junior who had attended 4 National Junior Awards Dinners all i can say is that you juniors and your parents are getting robbed of a great and memorable evening in my opinion.
Cindy D.

I agree.
The past 3 years I have been to the dinner dance and they have been exactly the same, walking in sitting down, eating, presentation then dancing.
And the bowlers love it, i guess we wont be dancing to the nutbush or the maccerina this year...

An after party sounds great, but i doubt the coaches/managers would agree.

As a Junior ageing out this year i will definatley miss the tradition of the dinner dance.

Hey Jess..
I will still be wearing heels i can't walk in:p

Why don't you all just go in your formal wear anyway, and just give the rides a miss? Myabe if someone could organise some music, the hour that was meant for rides could be an hour of dancing? We were let down in 98 going to seaworld for our dinner dance, but we made the most of it!
