Victoria has finally hit the wall, nearly 20 years of arrogance in regards to development has finally paid off, and now when a result like this happens, everyone says why?????
You can't rely on bradford, malloy, stewart, thompson, powell, hogg, kiss like you have done in the past.
This is a bitter pill for the bowlers and the state, and hopefully now, someone will stand up and say we need to do something right across the board to fix this problem.
The poor showing by the men was not a show of the quality of bowlers in the team, but a showing of how shallow Victoria is in depth.
queensland have put so much time into development accross the board over the last 20 years, its good to see some hard work turn into some success at the adult level.
i expect NSW, QLD and to well and truly crush any previous success VIC has had since rachuig origins as the star performers at rachuig over the next decade or two without Victoria even having a say in it.
It disappoints me to see this happen, and hopefully now the appropriate people can now get some form of plan into action to rectify what could be a long term problem.

No offence but I think your kidding yourself. Even with your ASSISTANCE I think the Victorian team will struggle. In the late 70's and during the 80's the Vic team was unstoppable. Legends of the game like Bradford, Hogg, Molloy, Sullivan, just to name a few. The difference was DEPTH!!! Victoria had at least 15 guys who could win a National title in every event that ever got bowled. The ATBA was stronger than ever and you would have ridiculous numbers rolling off every year just trying to make the prestigeous team.
Now days, the ATBA is dying a slow death, the tournament scene down that way is ever decreasing and the depth of bowlers supporting the events is on the way down. Apart from Flynny, the Stewart family, helicopter Trotter and a few others there is nothing left to draw from the tank.
Look at NSW and QLD on the other hand and you'll see at least 20 guys who can play and who would make credible members of any team. I"m sorry Adrain, without a developement plan like QLD or NSW I think you are dreamville.

I have to agree with your comments. When I trialled for the rachuig team, only about 9 or 10 people realistically could of made the team.
Even the president shield try outs are the same. The depth of Victoria is enormously low. I have no idea where the ATBA has gone, and the lane conditions at tournaments are becoming rather a joke. Look at the AO for instance.
I have absolutely no idea how we can get it back. I know the independant centres are trying to organise a Grand Prix around the state, but other than that, I really only see AMF trying to grab money from the non league bowlers.
However, saying that, I am pleased to say that a few centres have quite a few junior leagues going on. Keon Park for instance has 28 lanes FULL of juniors on a friday night (damn those juniors, I cant get any practise lanes hehe).
The coaching in Vic is pretty much dead as well. You have Kevin Brawn up in Albury who pops down maybe once every 5 weeks, Joe Tomasinski, who is going to move down to Morwell (god help the morwell team), and Louise Eadie who does a few over at Keon Park. There is also Patrick Birtrig at Mooroolbark, but havent really heard much from him lately.
Other than that, who is there? I would of thought some of the higher profile bowlers like your Bradfords and your Ryans, may have contemplated passing on the wealth of information that they gained while on the tournament scene, but much to my disappointment, they havent.
So what does one inspiring bowler do in this situation? Does he go and move to where the opportunities are better? Or stick it out and hope someone might pop up for some help.

This is the future!!!
Maybe the tank is a little bit empty down here these days as far as bowlers go. Oh well, the only way is up from here, just hope the good young uns stick with it.

All good points but the main problem in Victoria. Lack of information. President shield tryouts an example. 11 Girls 23 boys. Why because nobody knew they were on. So who do you blame. Do we blame the T.B.A. maybe maybe not. Lets hope things improve on the imformation front. Pedro over to you lets post the dates for Presidents shield and Rachuig so everybody knows. And on the Junior situation at Keon Park its the same every night of the week and Saturday morning. So there is hope.

Great idea, Philby. I'm hoping to have the entry forms for President Sheild Trials available and personally handed to every Junior Bowler at next weekends Jnior Gold Pin event as well as at Junior Shield on the 8th & 9th of December.
Dates are Jan 19/20, Feb 2/3 and Feb 23/24.
Mooroobark, Morwell and Melton are the venues this year.
Successful juniors making the 2002 Vic team will represent their state at Bankstown Bowl in NSW 6-14 July 2002.
If any Vic junior is wanting more info on the trials and I don't catch up with you over the next month (particularly our country bowlers). Drop me an email with your details and I'll get an entry form to you.
I'd love to have 100 juniors try out for the team this year.
Additionally, we are already starting to think about next years WDV and WR trials.
At Rachuig this year we had a bad tournament - end of story. It happens.
The main thing is that we learn from the disappointment and come back
stronger. That will happen. It was a lefties centre and as we did not have
any we were disadvantaged.
Also 3 new guys will only help the future.
Unfortunately Bankstown is left handed as well.
Even though we struggled I think everyone still had a good week. Winning is not everything (but it certainly helps).
It is the first state team I have been away with that has had no issues amongst team
members. (men and women) I believe we still acted the same as when we won the year before. That is very important.
I am confident the Vics appreciate the fact that we get more freedom to do as we please and make our own decisions. ie. travel up, practice, meals, rooming.
I know that the other teams have a lot of trouble with these issues because they are treated like school kids. That leads to the
inevitable in-fighting and bitchiness.
Success will come if our players keep coming back and use the experience they have gained. That will happen if we keep them happy like this year. Look at this year - 8 new players out of 14. It makes it very
difficult.

I remember the second time I met you was at an SA Cup I think (Im sure you could tell me the time and date your memory for this stuff is so good), anyhow, I barely remembered you and you could recal almost every shot and every score you had on the lanes you bowled against me in the previous tournament (1 year earlier)...
Is that why you make such a good bowler? Because you remember house lines, conditions etc?

i will have to agree and disagree with brenton. I believe that when we got there on the friday the scoring on the left was alot easier than the right. But as the week went on the scroring definatly got easier on the right, i will be the first to admit that on thursday, friday and the masters on saturday the right hand side was much easier than earlier in the week.
But i do give me regards to brenton, even tho he had a golf ball of a blister on his finger he stil gacve me a good match. And i must congratulate fred, he has been around for ages and is still one of the nations best, i just that one day i can be as good as him.

Since we have drifted off the topic I might as well add to it. Pedro, the only reason why there were a few lefties in the finals at NSW this year was because of the number of games that was involved. If you made it a 8 game qualifier and 8 game finals, you would see everyone on a level playing field. What happended at that event and at several others was the right and the left started off even, but through heaps of traffic on the right and shear number of games, the righties shot became tougher when the lefties didn't move much all day. Thats what happended with most of the Super 6 events, I would hardly consider Bankstown a lefty's house, seems pretty fair to me.
