LEAGUE IDEA

Hi folks,

Instead of re-inventing the wheel, I thought I would bounce the idea of a league format off all of those 'experienced' bowlers out there, just in case this idea has been tried before without success..

('experienced' is a politically correct substitution for OLD)

THE IDEA is to keep full teams coming back week after week - unlike currently when a team (or individual) in a league is well off the pace 1/2 way through, they lose interest because they dont have a hope of taking home the winners trophy.

HOW DOES THIS SOUND.

90% of each weeks prize fund is paid out on a weekly basis.
Teams play for points each week - using a combination of winning points and peterson points.

Bonus points are added each week to the non-cashing teams as an incentive for the following week.

The other 10% of prize fund is saved for the final night and used for the end of league break-up (with small trophies for the top three teams and other awards as deemed suitable by the league).

In effect, I am talking about mini-tournaments from week to week.

An example of the 'adding points' is:

A league of 16 teams - the team who comes last this week gets a bonus of 10 points to take to the next week. The team who comes 15th gets 9 points, 14th gets 8 points etc... The top 6 teams do not get a bonus. Monies paid out means that the 1st place team gets their league money back plus a small bonus. 2nd place get their entry back and some free practice game vouchers. 3rd place get their money back, 4th get 1/2 entry back and some free game vouchers, 5th get 1/2 money back, 6th get some free game vouchers.

The points carry over from week to week (so if you come last 5 weeks in a row, you turn up to bowl on the 6th week witha 50 point bonus.).

All points are taken away once you win a week, and you are bought back to ZERO bonus.

Has anyone tried anything like this before - if so, how did it go?

If not, do you think the idea has merrit?

Look forward to your input.

Hi Browny,

Any new idea is worth a look - leagues can get boring when half the field is out of it halfway through the season.
One idea we tried in Innisfail was a Divisional league - we ran it as a singles. 18 players divided into 3 mini leagues of 6 players. Each division played 5 matches round robin, then a positional week. At the end of each round, prizefund was paid out to the top 3 in each division based on points won in that round only. Then, the bottom 3 from Div. 1 & 2 got 'relegated' down to the next division, while the top 3 in div 2 & 3 went up. The round points accumulated for the overall standings for an overall payout at the end of the seaon (which was five or six rounds from memory). Works well, as the top bowlers tend to play each other a lot, which stops them establishing a huge lead over the lower averages.
