I’m sorry to disappoint the majority here but I have not and will not be applying for the CEO position.
As Andrew S has rightly pointed out I have a full time profession and it is far more financially rewarding. Last year I sold my previous business, Struc Plus Pty Ltd, which allowed me the 5 months of a year off work to volunteer my services to the sport in my previous TBA roles. However, with a new business now off the ground and going well I need to be hands on 6 days a week. My 4 weeks a year of annual leave is dedicated to the sport at my own choice and expense. I will continue to support Holt, ATBSO and a few local tournaments.
As you can see from Jase’s pic we also spent the children’s inheritance and changed our lifestyle to apartment living. With a view like this we’re not moving.
IMHO, the entire organisational structure of this sport needs to be re-visited. Clearly, with the demise 10 years ago of ATBC and more recently TBA Mk 1, the structure and acceptance by the members is not working. If TBA collapse, then the ASC will adopt the 3 strikes you’re out attitude and no longer support tenpin bowling.
My wife and I had dinner with a proprietor on Tuesday night and the following was my suggestion on what needs to be done to re-structure the sport and move forward.
TBA needs to be the recognised NSO governing this sport, controlled by a purely voluntary Board only. A CEO, or any paid staff, is not required. TBA’s role is purely to govern the sport, its rules and has no operational duties.
All operational duties are outsourced to organisations that specialise in services to ALL members (not just the elite few). An outsourced membership organisation need only return a $1 per member to TBA to offset the small costs associated with governance focused Board meetings, insurance, ASIC requirements and FIQ/WTBA affiliation fees. National teams are selected by a nominated selection panel and, as it currently the case. ASC funding is to be obtained and used solely to offset the full costs of these teams.
You don’t have to be a mathematical genius to realise that the national championships, due to the lack of promotion and therefore decline in numbers, over the past 12 months are run significantly in the red. The conduct of the national championships should also be outsourced to an organisation or committee that know how to run successful and profitable events.
TBA already outsource the awards program and while this was done due to the administration costs of this program making it unprofitable, this should have been the start of other unprofitable operational roles.
It’s blatantly obvious that until something like the above is realised and adopted then nothing will change in this sport. Unfortunately, the vessel to do this is all but a closed shop and sadly only a collapse will instigate change.
I’ll be the first to put up my hand to assist in a re-structure.
I wish Wayne all the best in his pursuit of the Chair. This is a position that you must nominate and then be elected to, it’s not an appointment. Just remember to lodge your nomination form this time.
