Local Music Thread

Okay guys/girls,

I am from Melbourne and for nearly two years I have been touring all of the local establishments that support local music. Not just your pop type, musical stylings from all sorts...Roots, Blues, Jazz, Regae, Folk, Rock etc.

I would love to hear from others who haunt the small, smoke filled venues all over this country week in week out discovering new artists, buying locally produced CD's and generally supporting the local music industry. I am going to list some of the Artists I have seen over the years, feel free to add your favourites (local only, no mainstream) and where you have heard them; even include a website if they got one.

  • Carus & The True Believers
  • Loren & The Grow Your Owns
  • Ash Grunwald
  • Rob Sawyer
  • The Audreys
  • Xavier Rudd
  • Augie March
  • Austin
  • MJ Taylor
  • Yanto Shortis
  • John Butler Trio (Yes they are 'mainstream' somewhat, but they started local & are still local at heart)
Let me know what you find and if they tour, I would love some new ideas!

Saw a band called Fifty-Sixx doing a warm up for Billy Talent last month who were quite impressive. 99.9% sure they are Australian. I was impressed, been looking to try and find an album/EP for awhile now.

Later Da Cowman!

Xavier Rudd is a little mainstream aswell DaObserver....
There is a great Afro Funk Soul group I have seen a few times over here called The Hot Grits.... They can be found on Myspace and on www.hotgrits.co.nz.
They have an EP out aswell.

Good to see the local groups getting the support they need.

Paradigm shift is quite a good mid ranged metal/rock band.

A good "smoke filled venue" is the Evelyn on Brunswick street for lots of Australian Talent. Just make sure you check the playlist before you go, as there was a time I turned up and it was a 60's night ;)

The beer is pretty cheap too :D

For the metal fans there is a local Melbourne band called Vahrzaw. They play somewhere in the range of Black/Death Metal. They played The Barwon Club in Geelong on Saturday night and it was a top show. They dont get to play that much due to there not being a large call for metal acts at the moment.

i recommend a band calls COLOBUS ANTICS they are a group of boys in my year at school and i have played gigs with them on several occasions, they are seriously one of the best bands ive heard!

they follow such artists as john butler, jack johnson, and take their inspiration from them.

they will be releasing a CD later this year by the way

go and check em out

Don't ya just love that joint! Spot on too with the odd 'accidental' turn out for the wrong music. Have you checked out Northcote Social Club? They were throwing out some decent acts, had Kate Cebrano & James Reyne for the classic buffs. Recently have been a little lack but every now and then. Oh and they put on a bloody ripper parma too! ;)

Not too far from home either, quick trip on the tram, great for that one too many! :beerchug:

Cheers for the links, when me sound card gets up and running I'll give em a crack! Do they sell stuff via http://www.musicplug.net?

I have just found this thread and I have to add the band that me and my fiancee go see alot. The band is called The Pigs. Now before I rave on about them, I should mention that my fiancees brother is in the band (see Avatar pic although not clear).
They are a Hillbilly Funk band that tour around playing gigs around Sydney. They have just started in the last year to play at Country Music Festivals and musters (such as Gympie and Denliqun). They have an EP and you can buy your own Pigs Singlet.

You can catch them on there website www.thepigs.com.au.

If you get a chance catch Par, Strech T-Bone and Cousin Billy-Bob as they are great, and I may be a bit bias but they are really good.

Awesome stuff guys, thanks for all the links...

I have been very busy having a look at them all, I must say there is quite a variety of music out there and things like this only help develop the local scene!!! :band:

Keep up the links!!

Cheers :D
