Is Belmo Bowlings Happy Gilmore?

this could be the start to bowling in aus being revived.. its good news and i hope something comes out of it

I would love to help bowling in anyway shape or form, i mean i love it and its apart of my life, the better bowling gets around the world (and Australia) the better it is for me and everyone else who loves the game like i do................... so if anyone reads this and wants to "USE" me to showcase 'modern' tenpin bowling, i have 3 words for you.....IM FOR SALE :)

You state you love the sport of tenpin bowling, don't think anyone would argue that point. Your dedication, commitment and talent makes that obvious. I find it disappointing though that your offer of helping to promote the sport you love so dearly has to have a price tag on it!
Just my '2cents' worth - yeah and we all know that with rounding that equates to zero :p
Enjoy the day
...oh and I'm (I am) for sale is 4 words :p

Todays game has change dramatically, so why wouldnt the style???......but one thing will always stay the same.........who can strike and spare more than anyone else...so far 2 handed bowling seems to be winning in the strike department!
I agree it's a good idea to promote Belmo as Bowlings Happy Gilmore. What I don't agree with is the idea of teaching kids and people new to the game how to bowl 2 handed. As Belmo said the game of Tenpin Bowling has changed so dramatically in recent times, so why interfere anymore with what little tradition we have left about our sport. Those like Belmo who have the natural talent to bowl 2 handed have my full support but shouldn't be recommended to young bowlers new to the sport.

well thats my two cents worth

Interesting point......

Here is a question for you.

How much money do you think it would cost to travel all round OZ, staying in hotels and other costs that may come hand in hand with promoting the game, just in OZ????
Trust me i love bowling, but my family (Kimberly) comes first. The home loan, car loan, my already huge travel bill (which I pay for, year in, year out) and an amazing wedding i have this year, bowling does not have the $$$ to say that out of the goodness of my heart ill cover all my costs. I'm not Tiger!
If bowling had the big $$$ we wouldnt even be talking about this right now.
Plus everytime i spend money to travel, do well and get bowling on TV or in a newspaper or magazine, thats promotion that i have paid for. I know my pockets are deeper than most bowlers but come on......"When will common sense prevail"
So PIE, unless my lucky numbers get said this week in lotto, ill stand by my comment.....I'M FOR SALE.

Again before posting why not ask him...... I have and he has no worries with his back either.
Remember when a 1 handed bowler tries it he has not developed the muscles in this back, like i have not developed the muscles in my arm to bowl one handed all day. So its going to hurt if you dont build core muscles and take it step by step, nice and slowly.
In saying all that i can see why people may think Osku would have back problems, he has alot more rotation in his back than i do, but i am sure he has developed the muscles where he needed to, just by starting so young.
Kegel and USBC see 2handed bowling as the future of the sport. The people i have spoken to, believe sooner than later the 2 handed style will be the norm.....that's their opinion, my ideas may differ and im sure many older players will dis-agree with it too.
Its much easier than you think (2 handed bowling) and once you understand it, learning it becomes easier.
Plus i personally think bowling is much more a mental game anyway, so i try and teach kids that part of the game more so than throwing the ball perfect.

Do you know how many under 10's want to bowl like me?? Its amazing. Seeing kids bowl and just love it, is truly a site to see. I think we have lost many youth players around the country because they were told their way of bowling (which could of be any kind of style) is not correct, this is 'the right way' you should.
If someone tells me something and that something stops me from enjoying the game, ill flip them the bird and continue to do it my way (well maybe not actually flip the bird haha).
Kids bowl because its fun, if bowling 2 handed is fun for them why not try and develop their skills instead of telling them "tradition" is too important and coaching with 1 hand (which is bowling 1 handed) the only way to go????
Now this may or may not of made sense..... I just got off a flight from Sydney to LA, so if i sounded irate, believe me its not personal im just tired :)

ps- Dont forget to check out www.jasonbelmonte.com over the next few days for my updated dairy entries about bowling in Las Vegas.

(was that an obvious plug???)

As for which style is correct, i believe its the one that works for you!
If you happen to bowl two handed and it works well then good for you,
If you bowl the "traditional way" then good for you.
The kids growing up will one day make up their own mind on which shot they want to play!

Good luck in LA Belmo, all the best.
Cheers

Brenton puts up a great thread about using the best in the world to promote our game.

Guess what happens? Cheap shots at George, people questioning Belmo's fitness and dedication to the game, blah blah blah.

here's a hint to you all - GET A LIFE

Now getting back to the original post - who would teach Thommo to bowl that way? No-one but he was used to promote cricket and he certainly brought people in through the gates. It took twenty years before we saw anyone else like him. Same with McEnroe, Dennis Rodman, Borg, Nolan Ryan etc etc etc

This is a great idea and heres hoping that TBA can get something organised.

Yes it is a pity that people come on here and criticise and make assumptions about JB.
He has already done more for Australian bowling than anyone else and he deserves our thanks, not our criticism.

I just got off a flight from Sydney to LA, so if i sounded irate, believe me its not personal im just tired

There is some dedication for you. I know after that flight, the last thing I wanted to do was go on the 'net. I only wanted 12 hours sleep 'cos row 54 in a 747 is not a great place to get a decent sleep.

I think Belmo should be compensated for time, travel, accomodation if he were to be used in a promotional campaign (whatever the form) because as he states, the prizemoney is not great in this sport and with all the expenses he has in chasing what little there is, I doubt there would be a massive kitty left over.

To Deadman Inc.

I understand where you are coming from, but we all said the same thing 25 years ago when the first crankers came on the scene. There will always be a place for "traditional" or "conventional" type players in this sport. Thats why someone like Belmo is promotional gold.

It would be good to see a 'Happy Gilmore' charater of bowling. To Belmo, you are doing a great job promoting the sport with what you have done and what you are doing. Things like the Grandstand interview last week to the Fox Sports TV interview will really help to get people to take notice of our sport.

Good luck in Vegas!

To everybody else, it's good to see so many other people doing a great job at promoting the sport, and also good that this topic has been raised. Maybe in the near future we could see a movie called 'Happy Belmo'?

Here's a random thought...imagine bowling's Reg Reagan??? :D

I would have to agree here! Bowling is a sport that needs more credibility and one way of gaining credibility is to stop promoting without any benefit. There are too many coaches in Australia especially that provide there expert services for free (and the love of the sport) rather than for money. Similar to what Jason said, I wouldn't expect Tiger Woods to promote golf for free, so why should one of the best bowlers in the world (Jason) promote bowling for free.

Plus i personally think bowling is much more a mental game anyway, so i try and teach kids that part of the game more so than throwing the ball perfect.

Couldn't have said it better myself... I'd add that it is more important once you become relatively consistent with your technique.

Do you know how many under 10's want to bowl like me?? Its amazing. Seeing kids bowl and just love it, is truly a site to see. I think we have lost many youth players around the country because they were told their way of bowling (which could of be any kind of style) is not correct, this is 'the right way' you should.

Continuing on the agreeable trend. I also would suggest that youth bowlers drop out because they believe there is no future in bowling and no money to be made. If your good enough and strive hard enough, you can be the best bowler in the world, traveling the world and winning enough money to support yourself and your family (like Jason). Australian bowlers don't see that "forward thinking" perspective enough, they just see the "National" outlook and stop there. If you really want it enough and seek the right coaching, you can make it happen.

Hence, promotion of the sport and seeing the "wider picture" (not just the narrow outlook of national bowling) is the key to youth bowlers future. If we can promote Jason as (dare I say) the ambassador of modern tenpin bowling in Australia, participation rates may increase because of his success and style. If participation rates increase, then there will be an increase in probability of successful results (due to more participation), which helps to promote an international bowling perspective, promoting more Australian bowlers and more world exposure and international recognition. Once international recognition happens, for more Australian bowlers (not just a handful) perhaps then more sport-related government funding and sponsorships for national competitions will surface, which is always good for the sport (especially nationally).

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself and carried away, but you get the picture.

Dr. Chris

I also would suggest that youth bowlers drop out because they believe there is no future in bowling and no money to be made.

All sports suffer from Youth Participants dropping out, its not just bowling. The commonly accepted belief is that they discover Sex and Motor Cars.

When I was a young fella, I remember seeing Cara Honeychurch on TV commercials to promote bowling. I think it may have been directed at School holiday bowling or even league bowling for AMF centres.

I think it would be good to see this again. Belmo on the screen, throwing a few balls and telling everyone how much fun it is and that you can actually go somewhere with the sport.

Food for thought.

Matt

Nice one Naf, spoke my mind!
I think the younger kids are actually attracted to a 2 handed style just because of the way it is, not to mention how good it looks when they can throw a coast to coast shot in front of all their little friends ;)

Andrew Frawley was doing that too aswell as Cara. It was on school holidays.

Kids will copy what excites them and if we can get people excited about the game so be it.

I know a nice young man who as a 10 year old wanted to bowl like me. Now he's kicking a$$ in a way I'd never imagined! When I was 16, EVERYONE told me I'd never be a good player using "too many" revs.

A pox on mediocrity I say! Flick 'em the bird (if only mentally) Jason! Keep rewriting the rules.

Cheers,
Jason

the adds on the tv with cara and frawls were awsome they got me into bowling.. so imagine wat belmo could do.. come on guys instead of taking cheap shots about his back and stuff like that.. put some effort into making the sport better

I can see it now…Belmo is just doing it all for the love of the Game…If he wins in Vegas I am sure he will give the Cheque straight to second place…

Actually Belmo really is on a Vacation full time…He only fly’s to these events for the frequent flyer points…;)

Word is that Belmo has cancelled all his squads for tomorrow and will be taking photos of all the casinos…:)

And since he is “FOR SALE” next time Belmo gets interviewed on TV or Radio he will say TotalBowling.com.au 10 times for $50.00 or 20 times for $75.00…:p

See we can start the ball rolling now…

Good luck in Vegas Belmo…Bring home the Chq…I will show you how to spend it...:marsa37:
