Spoke to Jason as he and Kimberly about to board their flight back to Oz this morning, and Belmo really appreciates the support of friends, family and fans that led to this latest accolade.

A radio interview is scheduled with Simone Thurtell on ABC GRANDSTAND tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, 16 July) around 12.45 pm, if you can tune in.

Meantime, here's the story released by ESPN following the Awards, including details of the replay on Sunday at 8pm.

AUSSIES GILMORE AND BELMONTE CELEBRATE ESPY WINS!

Surfer Stephanie Gilmore and Bowler Jason Belmonte were the toast of Australian sport today when Gilmore picked up the Best Female Action Sport Athlete and Belmonte the Best Bowler (Ten-Pin) at the acclaimed Annual ESPY Awards aired live today in Australia on ESPN.

2011 ESPY AWARDS TO BE REPLAYED SUNDAY Sunday July 17, 8pm on ESPN

The ESPYS honour the best athletes and most memorable moments from the world of sport with sports fans worldwide voting online at ESPN for the winners in more than 30 categories.

Gilmore and Belmonte were nominated for the awards this year alongside countrywoman Lauren Jackson who has won in previous years but has had injury setbacks and missed out, despite being nominated in two categories (Best Female Athlete and Best WNBL player).

Four time world champion Stephanie Gilmore succeeded in emulating the feats of last year’s Best Female Action Sport Athlete winner, fellow Aussie Torah Bright (Snowboarding). At just 23 years of age, Gilmore won four of the eight surfing events on the 2010 ASP World Tour on her way to a fourth straight points crown. Born in NSW, Gilmore continues to take the surfing world by storm in four short years since her rookie arrival in 2007.

Gilmore won the award over fellow action sports athletes Sarah Burke (Freestyle Skier), Kelly Clark (Snowboarding) and Ashley Fiolek (Motocross).

Jason Belmonte, was the dark horse of the competition. The 27 year old from Orange in the NSW Central West was nominated for the Best Bowler Award (Ten Pin) and given the longest odds by all the pre-award prediction experts. His unique action first saw him featured on ESPN’s E:60 in 2009. Belmonte finished the 2010-11 Professional Bowlers Association Tour (PBA Tour) with nine matchplay final and four championship round appearances. He ranked seventh in earnings after finishing sixth in the Dick Weber PBA Playoffs, seventh in the PBA World Championship and 10th in the U.S. Open.

Belmonte, ranked fourth on the PBA standings, overcame his more fancied rivals Americans Chris Barnes (#1 ranking) and Bill O’Neill (#2) and Mika Koivuneimi (Finland, #3) who all had outstanding seasons on the Tour.

The ESPY’s will be replayed this Sunday July 17 at 8pm, following the special red Carpet Show at 7:30pm.
