Australian Open champion George Frilingos, Left-handed, defeated Carl Bottomley, and Andrew Christopher both Right-handed, in the final round of match Play to win the third event on the 2007 Total Bowling Tour, and take out the 2007 Maryborough Heritage City Open in Maryborough Queensland, and the $800.00 top prize.

Following record-breaking results at the recent Australian Open, Frilingos was keen to keep up his great form of 2007. In one of the strongest fields to assemble in Maryborough for over 10 years with over 65 bowlers, which included bowlers ranked both number one and three in Australia, and both current and former Australian and Queensland Representatives from across the state.

Caboolture bowler Andrew Christopher set the first days pace with 1896+296 for his 8 games to lead qualifying from Bottomley 1870 +270 and Frilingos 1857 +257.Highlight of the first days play was Greg Kelly’s 297 in the very first game of qualifying on lanes one and two. That was also the high game for the tournament.

Day two and Christopher starts the first game with the front 10 strikes to leave a Minnie bucket on his 11th shot and finish with 287 and increase his overnight lead. Both Bottomley and Frilingos started fast in hot pursuit of the over night leader, and showed with years of Tournament experience and titles between them that they were doing there best to get that top qualifying position. Bottomley headed the field into the match play round with an outstanding 1421 stage two total, and Frilingos 1408 pushed over night leader Christopher 1305 to third. Rockhampton bowler Geoff Stevens 1341 for his 6 games on day two and a new personal best game score of 267 moved through the field to qualify for the finals in 7th position. Australian ladies team member Kate Wilton +265 was the only female in the field to make the finals. Others to make the finals were Darryl Alford+241, Jason Newhall+229, David Pooley+220, Geoff Stevens+220, Andrew Drew+198, Brad Reggars+167,Brian Pilkington+121, Ben Taylor+120, Paul Thoroughgood+109, Brendan Meads+103, and Stuart Crowley on+99 rounded out the top 15. Other highlights from the day were Ronnie Conquest’s 289 and as previously mentioned Geoff Stevens personal best game of 267.

The top 15 competed in a 3 person match play final over 7 games. The winner receiving a bonus 40 and second places a bonus of 20. The top three really dominated this event and could at no stage of the event ever be caught. Caboolture bowler Andrew Drew and new Australian men’s team member Brian Pilkington were the big movers in the finals qualifying 9th and 11th respectively to finish both in 4th and 5th positions at the completion of play. Frilingos started slowly with a 222 game an a loss in the first round but soon found the form that won him the Australian Open 6 days earlier and won the next 5 games straight with scores of 258, 257, 259, 279, 204, and despite loosing with a 244 last game against Bottomley and Christopher he had done enough to seal the victory. Bottomley holding onto second place by a mere 5 pins heading into the last game of match play and needed to defeat Christopher in the final game of the tournament and did so with a 279 to 246 to cement his third second place finish of the Tour and Christopher finished third.
