George (Farnham) Frilingos claims the circuits’ first tour stop for 2008 in Bundaberg Queensland…

The Rum City Classic played host to 71 of Australia’s best bowlers on the first weekend in February. 57 men and 14 ladies went into combat to see who would be crowned Male and Female champions of the Rum City Classic for 2008…

The field made up of 2007 champions Brandon Qualischefski and Leesa Bartlem. Leading the challenge are hammer staffer Jason Walsh and Lawrie Hill, Qubica AMF staffers Kate Wilton, Carl Bottomley and George Frilingos, both former and current Australian and State Reps Brian Pilkington, Morty Douglas, Brendan Meads, Jim Murray, Luke Rafton and Kristy Sullivan. Leading the local assault is Andrew Steadman, Brendan Thompson and Ray King Laura Henry and Josie Sommer.

The event is qualifying over 14 games in two appearances, and then cutting to the Top 15 for 3 people Match Play.

In what should surely be his last visit to the Rum Capital of Australia for bowling anyway, Frilingos came from behind to snatch victory from defeat against Australia’s inform right hander and current Australian men’s captain Jason Walsh. Current Australian representative and first day leader Brian Pilkington of Queensland was third…

Frilingos bowling in his third event since his claytons retirement, defeated Walsh in the final Match Play game of the tournament to win by only 38 pins…Throwing his new Qubica AMF product, and in Graeme Morgan’s bowling shoes, he went on to win the “2008 Rum City Classic” at the Bundy Bowl and Leisure Complex in Bundaberg, QLD.

Frilingos lead the Tournament into the Match Play round, after averaging 211.1 for his 14 games of Qualifying, throwing his Qubica AMF product…After a poor start to the tournament Jason Walsh of Ballina opened up the second day of qualifying with 964 for the first 4 games to catapult himself to second place leading into the finals, with an average of 210.1 for his 14 games…

Brisbane’s Carl Bottomley with his new sponsors equipment was sitting tied for third with overnight leader Brian Pilkington both averaging 209.8…

Defending champion Qualischefski was lurking back in 8th spot and by no means out of the tournament and local bowler Andrew Steadman 1 place further back in 9th and a qualifying average of 198.0…Gold Coast’s Brian Looby and Kingaroy’s Tyrone Watson both tied for 14th at 78 under the card rounding out the finals on a 194.4 average for their 14 games…Tyrone making his first ever major finals appearance… Kate Wilton was the only female bowler to make the Match Play, the third time for her in three weeks…

With Match Play underway Walsh had the engraver starting to put his name on the trophy, with a very nice 254 out of the blocks and the 40 bonus seen him give the field something to chase early… Walsh made the best of the fresh conditions and always new that Frilingos was going to get better as Match Play unfolded and the conditions broke down…the rest of the field were tussling and at different stages, the top 7 changed order throughout the first 5 games of the finals…Six pins separated the leader Walsh and Frilingos was not going to be denied in the final game, at this stage everyone else was playing for third…

Both bowlers starting with the front five and Bottomley with a couple of closed frames and a turkey to stay with the leaders…”Why do I get the feeling I am just making up the numbers in this match” Bottomley uttered to the crowd…Walsh left a 2-8 in the 6th frame and spared it Frilingos kept the string going and went onto bowling a very nice 268 receiving the 40 bonus, enough to take the win from Walsh 244 and 20 bonus to help him capture the Rum City Classic by 38 pins, Bottomley 189 and last year’s runner up seen him slip to 5th.

Day one leader Brian Pilkington from Brisbane was third and Kingaroy’s Morty Douglas after a lengthy spell making his first appearance on the lanes since last year’s Nationals finished a creditable 4th only 20 pins behind Pilkington…
Defending champion Brandon Qualischefski couldn’t find the form that makes him the most feared bowler on the lanes north of Brisbane and finished 6th.
Local bowler Andrew Stedman finished a respectable 7th just one place ahead of the only lady in the final QMF Qubica staffer Kate Wilton…

The ladies division was won by Wilton after making the cut and finished the highest place Female for the event with an average of 196.2 for her 21 games in the event…Second place went to Alicia Meads who averaged 193.4 for her 14 games and third went to defending champion Leesa Bartlem from Rockhampton averaging 186.9 for her 14 games…

Tyrone Watson of Kingaroy in his first major finals appearance rounded out the top 15…

Others to make the finals were 9th Brendan Meads,196.8…10th Brian Looby,195.6…11th Andrew Drew,195.2…12th Cameron Walsh,192…13th Nathan Stein,191.4 14th Steve Hampson,186.7…15th Tyrone Watson,186.5

A big thank you to Peter and his staff for a great weekend of Entertainment and a very well run event. The café food once again was outstanding and the in centre entertainment for both children and adults is endless…This is such a family friendly place to visit…It is a credit to you.

Thanks once again to Andrew Christopher for doing a great job with the scores and to have the end of year points up already is just sensational…

What a great team Kellie has running this circuit for TotalBowling and the numbers entering these events is now starting to show that Bowling in

Nice :D

Thank you to Kellie for organising yet another great event, thanks to Andrew Christopher who kept everyone updated with the scores, and to all the staff at the bowl for hosting a successful event.

Thanks to Qubica for their support even in my retirement (cough, cough)

Hey George, didn't you retire in December. Every time I check scores, your name pops up. I might make a comeback, if you are still bowling. Maybe I will see you at the Gold Coast.
Lovey
