George Frilngos today became the 2010 Cairns Open Champion, after finishing in front of Brandon Qualischefski and Carl Bottomley with local bowlers Chris Carney and Steve Hunt rounding out the top 5 placings.
After the 12 games of qualifying Frilingos sat atop the field with a highly impressive 243 ave. The highlights of qualifying were 300 games by Brandon Qualischefski and Faye Bottomley as well as a 298 for Chris Carney.
Pinfall carried over for the next 6 games (Stage 2) which saw the top 18 vying for a spot in the top 12 matchplay. At the conclusion of these games Frilingos remained on top with an 18 game average of 232, with Innisfail local EJ Starkey rounding out the 12 places with an overall average of 206. The highlight of this round was a very nice 290 to Brandon Qualischefski.
Then it was onto stage 3 and the fun began. Carl Bottomley flew out of the blocks like Usain Bolt and threw 993 for the first 4 games to establish a commanding lead. It was then that the he started to show a few signs of fatigue, (in heat that reminded me of the time I bowled the Bombay Open in New Dehli
) and sensing blood in the water those two tiger sharks of bowling Brando and George started to circle as well as local Chris Carney and Kuwait bound young gun Hamish Rogers.
Bottomley used all of his immense talent and years of experience to continuously repel the challengers, however game 9 was the turning point of the whole tournament. Carl playing on the notoriously tough 9&10 recorded a game of 135, while Frilingos recorded a 239 and 20 bonus pins to take the lead.
Brando tried valiantly to reel in the left handed Queenslander (read this as dirty stinking cheating cacky hander) but to no avail as Frilingos finished game 11 with an impressive 264 to record yet another victory in North Queensland.
Chris Carney was the highest placed local finishing 4th with an overall average of 209.
In the ladies division local Townsville bowler Marissa Schulze posted a very healthy performance to finish qualifying for B Squad in top spot with a 206 average to lead from Cairns locals Larissa Nastasi, Maddy Hill and Leanne Nastasi. But then Faye Bottomley bowled C Squad and dominated from the outset to post a very impressive 218 ave to win the ladies division by a very commanding 142 pins.
It was great to see some of the up and coming NQ youth bowlers taking part and doing well, with Nick Lees, Allan Sloan Jnr, Brian Thomas, Aaron Nowak all making the top 18.
A huge thanks to Gavin, Damo, Sue, Katrina, John and the rest of the crew for a great tournament and a great time and look forward to seeing everyone in 2011.
