World Women Championship 2009 in Las Vegas
WTBA Presidium decided at their meeting in Kuwait on 26 April that WWC 2009 will be held in Las Vegas, USA, 26 July – 2 August 2009 with last arrival date 25 July. The dates and site have been changed because Australia withdrew as host two months ago. A bowling arena will be built in Las Vegas with 56 lanes.
New rules – immediate effective
Tie rules
WTBA Congress 2007 decided to implement semi-finals and finals in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team events in our World Championships. That means we need a correct ranking of the first four places after the qualifying games.
WTBA Presidium has decided as a Bye-Rule the following tie rules for Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team event, effective already in WYC and WMC 2008. This rule replaces the current 5.13.2 and 6.12.2
“In case a tie exists in the standings for the first four places in Singles, Doubles, Trios or Team event before the semi-finals a roll off, frames 9-10, will be played. If a tie still exists, another roll off will be played until the tie is broken. In Doubles, Trios and Team events one (1) player in each team shall be selected to play the roll off.
One pair of lanes will be prepared with one lane short oil and one lane long oil. A draw decides which player starts to play.”
Masters
WTBA Presidium has decided to change rule 5.11.3 to the following. “Each match will be played on one pair of lanes – one lane with short oil and the other lane with long oil pattern”
Rule 6.10.regarding Masters for WYC was decided to have the same wordings as 5.11 – including the change mentioned above.
Altering surface of bowling balls
In WTBA Congress 2007 rule 4.10.2 was changed with immediate effect. This rule about altering the surface of bowling balls is valid in World Championships.
WTBA Presidium decided in meeting in Kuwait in April 2008 that this rule also shall be effective
in approved tournaments. This means that rule 2.10 will be changed with immediate effect to: “Altering the surface of the bowling ball is allowed in a designated area during the official practice session, during the practice session immediately preceding a competition round, and between competition rounds.
A player may not alter the surface of the bowling ball during a game. During a stepladder final format, each match is considered a competition round.”
Special rule for WYC 2008
WTBA Presidium has decided that in WYC 2008 in Orlando an exception from rules 6.6.4 and 6.7.4 will be accepted. All girls will play in one squad in Singles and Doubles. Two teams from the same federation will play on lanes close to each other, so that it will be possible for one coach to cover all players from his federation if necessary. The change of lanes after each game shall be arranged that each team in total play ‘over the whole centre’.
WTBA and FIQ Congresses 2009
In conduction with WWC 2009 there will be Congresses. WTBA Congress will be on 3 August and FIQ Congress 4 August. This time the Congresses are after the Championships because of World Games.
World Games 2009
World Games 2009 will be held in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei with the bowling events on 20 - 22 July. This means there will be very short time for those players that also will participate in WWC in Las Vegas! We will try to find out recommendations for travelling from Taipei to Las Vegas for players and coaches involved in both events.
The qualifications to World Games will take place:
For American zone in El Salvador 2-6 June 2008; For Asian zone in Asian Championship 4-11 July 2008 in Hong Kong; For European zone in European Cup Champions 20-26 October in Duisburg, Germany
Invitation to host WWC 2011
No applications to host WWC 2011 were received until 15 April. The period to apply for hosting World Women’s Championships 2011 and WTBA and FIQ Congresses has been prolonged.
If you intend to apply, contact WTBA Secretary General [email protected] and he will send you the application document/form.
The Application form shall be sent to WTBA Secretary General latest 1 August 2008.
No bowling in 2016 Olympics
FIQ has received information from IOC that bowling still is not on the short list of sports which will be evaluated as possible medal sport in 2016. The decision about the medal sport will be taken in IOC Congress 2009 in Copenhagen.
We now have to work with and develop our sport until next selection – probably another four years in the future.
Member federations
Morocco and Isle of Man is no longer member of FIQ, WTBA and ETBF. We welcome Serbia as a new member of FIQ and WTBA.
Next Presidium meeting
Next WTBA Presidium meeting will be held 6-7 October 2008 in Barcelona, Spain. Member federations that want to submit proposals which they wish to be considered by the Presidium have to send the proposals to WTBA Secretary General latest 5 September 2008.
