Queensland Rachuig 2010 – State Team Trials Venue and Dates.

I will back Morty on this one. The modern day bowler does not get a feel for 5 person TEAM bowling, as there is not much of it left. Try it, it is the best time, and learning experience you will ever have in the sport of tenpin.
Selections/ Roll-offs, you will never get it right, because there is too much negativity in our chosen sport. You can only reach a decision and go with it.
Everyone has a choice, no-one forces anyone to do anything.
The has been.
Animal.

Sorry, I used my wifes log-in.

Your Pretty much on the money Morty regarding distances
Townsville is approx a 4 hour drive and Cairns is approx a 8 hour drive, rocky is also about 4.5 hours.

I know that l'm a stinking Mexican and a bloody left handed one at that, but with two seperate rolloffs, one Nth one Sth, is it as simple as taking the top 3 from each rolloff making the Rachuig team, and pos 4-6 from each rolloff the inv team? I heard that this year it is a 6 man squad not 7, is that true?

Hi Bluey,

Yes you are correct that Rachuig has been reduced to only 6 player rooster. On the other We use our current roll off to filter players into the Various State Development squads and we use selection as we do not believe that a roll off by itself all though simple in its system has not worked for QLD. The Years that we have done well since I have been involved have always included Selection.

I think also we need to take a longer term view to what we are trying to achieve. This year as a first for QLD not sure if other states have done it we have a prize fund for our roll off. This is the first step in moving our Selection Trials to a Tournament Format that is truly State Wide and There fore a far more attractive sponsorship proposal to a prospective sponsor then two small roll offs held in relative obscurity in two places in the state

Hmmmm, i see a coach is 'helping' with the conditions again. Dear oh bloody dear :( Coaches coach, techs do the lanes can we go back to that one day?

Adrian,

Once again I think you overestimate the input that is supplied. The goal of lane conditions is to provide a platform for the selectors to see the bowlers at the roll off showcase there skills and abilities. The selectors have requested that the players bowl of conditions similar to what can be expected at the nationals. I think Last years Nationals Patterns showed that we don't want roll offs on house patters it needs to be tighter. The input that will be given and I am only guessing is something long something short maybe something flat. I don't know but i can say Leaving it up to the center to put down what ever they choose is also on the other end of the scale. The Techs still to the lanes it is not like the "Coach that is Helping is Programming the Machine" it is about all work together Center Techs Bowlers and Adult Committee. Once again I would be more than happy for someone to come on board the Adult Committee that has Techinical Knowledge of Lane Conditions and Machines to Allow us to improve this part of our process.

I don't see the issue in this, Infact I think it is important that the selection panel get input into the Trail conditions.

My thoughts anyhow.

Cheers

Morty

Thats fair enough, im just overworrying again. Ive got some definate opinions on what id like to see coaches doing and after nationals last yr i thought some were doing a bit too much, that why i worry i guess :p

Hi Adrian hope you are getting well again. Sounds like you are.

Re the pattern, Gail is unable to be at Mackay due to other committments so I will be TD for the weekend.

I will have a brief chat to the Mackay tech but thats all it will be. He probably knows more than I do.

I am personally more familiar with the Ashmore house pattern which is generally applied on Tuesdays and to the back end only.

Morty,

The statement regarding sponsorship being more compelling for one big roll-off compared to two small ones, rings true. If I were in a position to sponsor a tourney, I'd think that way too.

However I don't believe it will solve the problem of the getting the 'masses' (or lack thereof at the moment) to attend roll-offs.

I have been thinking (I know it is hard but I have to do it every now and then ;)) and have come up with a couple of more questions:
You said development squad(S), is there a north and south dev squad?

What about a combined development squad?

For the people who do make it into the development squad (i.e. make it through the roll-off). Is attending the development squads mandatory?

Where I am coming from here is that the big problem is monetary and travel (not as an excuse, but as a reality) for BOTH north and south, for the roll-off. I would ASSUME (could be a bad assumption) that once one has 'MADE' the development squad they would be more willing to part with their hard earned.
In this way, having the two roll-offs to just determine the make-up of the development squad (no selection is present at that stage), in a central location for each respective zone (say, Townsville and Bundaberg), would make it more cost effective for both zones, without the 'selection' issues. This would make it approx five hours travel for all rather than 12 hours for some.

The 20 (10 from each zone) are then REQUIRED to undergo selection throughout THE development squad (making it clear that making it through roll-off, attendance of the ‘development squad’ or better put SELECTION SQUAD, is required and costs are inevitable). Maybe over a full and intense weekend at a central location (say, rotating yearly Mackay/Rockhampton) and this is where all of the selection processes are accomplished.

This will hopefully impose smaller costs to the masses rolling-off, hence getting a lot more to attempt roll-offs, while imposing the bulk costs to the few that make the development squad (the ones that would be more willing to outlay the larger costs as they have already 'made the cut', so to say and have a smaller pool to compete against. This would also put a greater impetus and importance to the development squad and in turn, making great QLD bowlers.

Understand though, I am not suggesting a change. I am just looking at obtaining information and throwing out ideas for all to mull over. Hopefully someone reading will have a brainwave that fits all of the pieces together, in a better way than I am suggesting. ;)

Hi Fitzy,

No there is not to my knowledge a northern Zone and Southern Zone Development Squad? I know that TBAQ / Gail are running Development Camps in both Zones This year. Really the Development Squads and Format of , selection into and so forth is a Separate Area and Really the Domain of TBAQ and The State Coaching Director. My Comment was that the players that make it through and are reserves do go through to the state development squad. I would also point out that there are other changes that mean that players looking beyond State Representation must forfill certain training requirements.

BUT Once Again this is REALLY Gails area and perhaps you should shoot your ideas regarding development through to Gail on email.

I take on board your comments and Hopefully some Further comments will be sparked from your post.

Qld State Training Squads - will be operating in NQ and SQ this year.
The Rachuig Committee (via the Rachuig Coordinator) has asked TBAQ if the Rachuig teams could access the State Training Squads for a team preparation session - and this was agreed that all persons rolling off could access the program - but this will need to be booked by all players quickly.

TBAQ have formally provided sponsorship and specialist sponsorship for all higher average Qld bowlers who would like to take part. The ball company is providing shirts, and bowler kits, the venues have provided part sponsorship through low game prices and for 2 days bowling and technical support TBAQ are offering all this for only $140 per player. Lane fees alone cost more than this for two days playing so we are providing excellent value. Even those players currently sponsored will get something out of the program that is planned.

Some of the offers to bowlers interested in being part of the QSTS is an opportunity to take part in a ball review - (not available to those not sponsored by ball companies usually) actually experiment with different lay outs, on WTBA current lane conditions and patterns. State Training Squad (STS) bowlers will be able to brainstorm with previous international Australian representatives (who are Queenslanders), ball company representatives, and Australian team officials (Coaches) including the national Coach Chris Batson. Our program is more like a bowlers expo - all you would like to know about bowling and we provide the people to answer those questions and we provide the lane conditions for you to try out - for as long as you wish.

TBAQ would like to offer this to around 150 - 200 bowlers around the State - TBAQ received 20 nominations in the first week so I would advise all bowlers to nominate via the TBAQ website asap (we have provided a link to nominate www.tbaq.org.au) Scroll down an enormous front page on the TBAQ website and find State Training Squad TBAQ are including stand out talented Juniors (over 170 average only) and Ladies over 170 and Men over 180 average - Youth, Adult and Seniors who meet this criteria are welcome.

Dates are SQ March 13th & 14th AMF Mt Gravatt lanes
NQ July 3rd & 4th Kirwan Bowl Townsville
SQ tentative date 28/29th August or early September (to be advised)

It is expected to have 60 bowlers in each session - if NQ could supply more than 60 bowlers nominating we will include another sessions in NQ. TBAQ will accept the first persons booked - if late bookings for the March program enter after mid February shirts cannot be ordered in time to be received for the March program and always those booked in first will have preference.

NQ Bowlers will need to have their places booked prior to mid May.

Book on line and do not be disappointed.

HI everyone - I have just finished a reply on page 5 of this thread and am now reading page 2 -3-4 etc when I came across this conversation - would people like to have our own elimination in each zone for Rachuig in 2011?- it does not need to have special conditions - just each of 10 zones of Qld could have a roll off the top 3 qualify for the final roll off - this way you could qualify locally - if you are good enough the $5 extra on each roll off attempt would subsidise the finalists to the final (making the final free or if possible paying for some travel expenses) some associations assist their bowlers and some local councils can offer $200 to sportspersons also. This will get more local bowlers having a go to test themselves without the sacrifice that I am reading - and this will provide some assistance towards the next step?
I was thinking it would be great if it would be like a South Pacific qualifying round - to be part of the best State team in Australia - Qld of course. Maybe this has been done before? The opportunity to win money back is very attractive this year and it will be great if this works - I was just interested to see if many more local bowlers would attempt a go if they did it in rounds. Let us know here if you would do this if you could get over the first step locally?
Gail

Regarding the State Training Squad - I have omitted to include the fact that the March dates set for the State Training Squad was to suit sponsors, and the calendars of 5 State committees plus the National coach and national ranking tournaments. TBAQ do not want to be in conflict with dates set on the TBAQ calendar so 2 dates have been nominated and the second date for SQ will be negotiated for the State Training Squad after feedback from bowlers and tournament promoters. South Qld have the opportunity to go to EITHER the March date or suggest a suitable date for the August STS - which is being discussed presently as the 21st and 22nd of August or the 28th and 29th August this year. All Juniors, Youth, Adults and Seniors please let me know which would suit best. There is no conflict with the TBAQ calendar as the bowlers may choose which STS date they will take up PLUS indicate the month on their nomination form.

TBAQ do not want to deflect bowler participation from any of our wonderful tournament promoters who do a wonderful job each year. When nominating please indicate which program date would suit best.

Thank you

Gail

Hi Gail
Just having a quick look at this year's calendar, August 28 and 29 definitely looks like the better option later in the year since the Kingaroy Wide Bay tournament is on the weekend before. I imagine quite a few bowlers you would be aiming to get to the state training squad would be interested in bowling at Kingaroy also.
Darryl

Thank you for that - I have had a fair bit of feedback and the last week-end does look to be the best option.
I would like bowlers to nominate early and also in their nomination indicate the March date or the 28th & 29th August as i do not want to clash with any promoter - I still have now over 35 bowlers having received 15 just recently - I will make sure everyone knows the August date also so they will not have a conflict with any tournament being run in March. Remember we will be taking up to 200 bowlers over the 3 sessions across the State and I will need to order shirts and other resources early. Please put in expressions of interest in early plus the date of your booking.

Gail

The zone based roll-off idea is a great idea and could be a great way to get more people rolling-off for the state team in the future.

Dates of 28-29 August would be the better option.

Great to see the amount of effort TBAQ are putting into our states bowling progress. I for one appreciate all the effort and thought that is being applied. Thank you.
