Jason Belmonte raced straight back into the lead in Game 1 of the Men’s division Round of 24 at Northcliff Bowling Centre in Johannesburg overnight.

Starting strongly with a 256 game, Belmo then put his foot on the throttle to shoot his second perfect game of the tournament.

Biboy Rivera of The Philippines also came out of the blocks firing with a perfect Game 1, and Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kalika continued his stylish performance at this year’s World Cup with a 279 in the third, in close pursuit of America’s Tommy Jones.

Posting lines of 237, 188 and 247 in the next three games, Belmo dropped to second, 18 pins shy of Jones after the American rolled a 276 in the fifth game. A 279 game elevated Biboy Rivera to within 100 pins of third-placed Kalika.

32 year-old Jones held on grimly to the lead by a further three pins in the sixth game, but a 248 in the seventh saw Belmonte regain the lead by 18 pins. Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kalika shot a stunning 299 in the seventh game to consolidate his lead over Lucas Legnani from Argentina.

A horror final game with four open frames relegated Belmo to second once again behind Jones but a 239.36 average over 28 games strongly propels the Aussie into the Stage 3 quarter finals.

Throughout this evening’s match, local hero Francois Louw hovered close to the Top 8 cut, tied in ninth position after Game 3 with England’s Steve Thornton. The pair see-sawed with Hong Kong’s Wu Siu Hong around the coveted Top 8 cut, with Thornton finally missing the cut by just 29 pins despite an impressive 269 in Game 8.

Belmo and Rivera become the only two Asian Zone representatives to graduate to the men’s quarter finals, along with four bowlers from Europe, including South Africa’s Louw. US bowler Tommy Jones and Argentina’s Lucas Legnani from the American Zone make up the remaining eight competitors.

Earlier in the day, women’s defending champion, Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic continued her stunning form to finish top of the leaderboard heading into tomorrow’s round robin quarter finals. In second place is America’s Diandra Asbaty, a former World Cup champion who won the title in 2006 in Caracas, Venezuela. Third is Sherie Tan from Singapore, dual Silver medallist from the recent World Women’s Championships. Tan has featured in Top 3 placings in three of the four qualifying rounds.

Play resumes tomorrow in Stage 3, with eight further games in both divisions, and the top three on total pinfall going forward to the Stage 4 Semi and Final matches.

Best of luck Belmo :)

Surely that should be 3 bowlers from Europe and 1 from Africa...?? Even if Louw lives in Europe he is still representing an African nation.

Anyway, best of luck to Belmo, keep it up mate!

The women have bowled one game more than the men at this time.

Still, that would probably put her third in the mens, pretty awesome.

Edit.
As I posted they updated the mens. I guessed very well. She would be third in their division.

Great effort back to back, who was the last person to go back to back. Some senior female from Oz wasnt it.

Bit of a nail bitter. Both going into the 10th on a double. Aumi led by 1 pin, finshed 1st & went 9/X in the 10th & Asbaty went 9/8 to lose by 3.
