Miller Park typically features Brewers players scurrying around the base paths or hustling to make a fine defensive play against their National League opponents. On Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, fans will experience an athletic competition of a new kind as the USBC Masters will take place at Miller Park with ESPN providing television coverage of the finals. The announcement was made today by Brewers Executive Vice President Rick Schlesinger along with members of the USBC and PBA.
Miller Park will be turned into the ultimate bowling venue when four lanes will be constructed primarily along the infield dirt from short right field to second base, a process which will take workers approximately 48 hours to install the lane set-up. In October 2004, Miller Park also served as the site of the Masters finals.
“We are truly excited to have the opportunity for Miller Park to return as the site of this year’s USBC Masters tournament,” said Schlesinger. “Through the formation of Brewers Enterprises, the Club has prioritized Miller Park to be a suitable venue and host for such prestigious events. This opportunity allows us to showcase Miller Park as a versatile environment that can be utilized for non-baseball events.”
As a major on the Denny’s PBA Tour, the Masters is one of the sport’s richest and most prestigious events and will kick off the tour’s 2007-08 season in the United States. An expected field of more than 500 of the world’s top professional and amateur bowlers will compete for a prize fund expected to exceed $350,000.
“People still talk about the Masters finals at Miller Park,” said USBC CEO Roger Dalkin. “We’re fortunate once again to have this opportunity to partner with the Milwaukee Brewers and PBA to conduct one of bowling’s major championships in a Major League facility.”
In 2004, more than 4,300 spectators watched 11-time Denny’s PBA Tour champion Danny Wiseman of Baltimore defeat Patrick Allen 268-183 to win the $100,000 first prize.
“It was awesome,” Wiseman recalled. “Just absolutely incredible. We’re in a Major League Baseball facility and we’re bowling.”
Qualifying and double-elimination match play rounds for the 2007 Masters will be conducted at the 72-lane AMF Bowlero Lanes in Wauwatosa, Wis. Oct. 23-26. Pro-ams will be conducted on Oct. 27 with practice sessions scheduled for Oct. 22. After match play, the field will be narrowed to the four bowlers who will compete in the stepladder finals.
"Miller Park is a terrific venue, and we're very excited about staging the Masters finals there again," said PBA Commissioner and CEO Fred Schreyer. "The atmosphere was electric at our event at Miller Park in 2004, and we hope the great fans of Milwaukee will help us recreate that scene again. We believe it's a fabulous way to kick off our season."
The 2007 Masters will also feature the third annual Bowlfest, a bowling festival which features entertainment and an opportunity for fans to meet bowling stars and get an up-close look at the finals installation. Bowlfest will occur on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. at Miller Park.
This will mark the fourth consecutive and fifth time overall that the Masters has been held in Milwaukee. In addition to the 2004 finals, the 2005 finals were held in the U.S. Cellular Arena and last year’s finals were held at the Wisconsin Exposition Center at State Fair Park. The U.S. Cellular Arena (then Milwaukee Arena) also was the site of the second Masters in 1952.
Meanwhile, should the Brewers be the National League representative in the World Series, a contingency plan has been arranged for AMF Bowlero Lanes to be the alternate site for the finals.
Tickets to the tournament will go on sale on Monday, June 11 with ticket prices ranging from $10 - $75. Fans will be able to purchase tickets through the Brewers Ticket Office at (414) 902-4000, beginning June 11.
