National Training Squad

Currently a group of coaches, officials and state administrative personnel are in Melbourne at a conference dealing with many issues in regard to the Coaching and Officiating Program. A recommendation will be going to the CEO to set up the State based and National Training Squads. However to do this we need more active coaches of Level Two standard or above to participate running centre based feeder programs. There is currently a Level 2 Course advertised for ACT to be held in mid November this year on the websites and this course will be the last course until another is held in Qld later in 2008. National Training Squad athletes and centre programs will only be guided by TBA accredited and registered coaches. A full report from the conference once viewed by CEO will be posted on TBA website and Totalbowling in an effort to keep coaches and officials informed. We would hope that this will then decrease the amount of uninformed postings about our programs and that the queries can be answered by each State or Territory Association.

Great move June…thanks for that, any Coaching courses whether it is entry level or advanced for any state, can also be advertise in the Courses and Clinics section of this site…

We set this up especially so that members of this forum can access it easily and hopefully boost interest in these events for you…

June, if the cost wasnt so inflated, maybe more people would get a formal accreditation. There are plenty of people out there that have more knowledge and skills than the level 2 accreditation but will never get any formal accrediting due to the cost and the fact that there is travel and more costs involved.

So until such a time that the course costs are reviewed, you will never have enough accredited coaches at any level as it just isnt feasible to the people with the knowledge to pay.

The course costs are the absolute minimum and when compared to training and course costs of other sports - ours are much cheaper. This has been confirmed today in our conference by the Australian Sports Commission - both coach registration and course costs are some of the cheapest in the Nation. At a Level 2 course there are many hours on and off the lanes, resources, specialist lecturers, meals etc. TBA used to offset the Level 2 course costs until some of our funding was withdrawn, now it is user pays.
Some proactive associations have tapped into state and regional funding to assist their people to come to the course. The bottom line is that we set budgets for the courses and we have to have a minimum number of people to run them. We are doing the best we can without assistance.

There are many issues regards accreditation of coaches and officials for our sport. The main one is the cost of courses.

Because we have a less visual sport and lower popularity our coaches do not have that recognition in the broader community

We are generally still a volunteer coaching group and therefore do not treat the course cost as professional development

Most state associations have not received funding from the registration card or $ from state dsr, therefore have not funded these areas

The cost of courses is currently appropriate compared to other sports, but the renumeration to these individuals is not on par with the process either

Any suggestions for the inbalance, or practical solutions to encourage and support the officials?, afterall no team management, no team, no coaches through the centres, no increase in bowler numbers and representation.

June Voukolos is absolutely correct when she compares the cost of Tenpin courses to those of other sports and says that we are relatively inexpensive.
We are easily one of the lowest cost operations - a quick call to any of the State offices of other Sports will confirm this.
A friend recently obtained cricket level 2 accreditation and it was over $1700 and he didnt spend anything on travel or accomodation.
