Belmonte Too Good In Melbourne Cup

Hypercell = Hyperhook!
Jason Belmonte from Orange, NSW proved again why he is one of Australia's best and most inform bowlers taking the 2004 Melbourne Tenpin Cup in a last game show down with Andrew McArthur. Belmonte was up there all weekend, waiting until game 13 to make his jump into 1st place and take the title.

Initially it was all Andrew McArthur from the NT setting a blistering pace in qualifying accumilating a massive +573 for his 16 games (avg 235.8) 163 pins clear of 2nd place, Jason Belmonte. The top 5 after qualifying looking like this

1 Andrew McArthur NT C +573 235.8
2 Jason Belmonte NSW D +410 225.6
3 Luke Dick WA B +346 221.6
4 Brenton Davy SA D +323 220.2
5 Jason Walsh NSW D +300 218.8

Sam Parella from SA was the bubble at +108 over for the 16 games. As a big surprise, a lot of left handers featured in the top 16, the TBA 3 to 1 pattern throwing the lefties a bone for the first time in a few years at Ed Fleming lanes. Six lefties made the final, the most featured in a Melbourne Cup final in over 5 years.

In the finals McArthur didn't stop his scoring spree, putting on a great power display through out the entire matchplay. Belmonte though, game by game closing the gap.

It came down the last game between Belmonte and McArthur with Belmonte taking a 34 pin lead into the deciding game. As they qualified 1 & 2 they played each other last forcing the result to come down to the wire. The formula was simple, McArthur had to win by 5 pins to take the title, Belmonte just had to win.

With resemblences to Perth's final match, bowl bowlers started with the front 5 strikes, the huge crowd on hand offering their support to both bowlers with every shot.

Belmonte though continued striking whilst a run of single pins cost McArthur the title. Belmonte winning the final match 267 - 254. Belmonte extremely happy winning after his string of runner-up finishes over the last 4 months.

Victoria's Paul Trotter securing 3rd, with last weeks winner Jason Walsh finishing 4th. Final results below

1 +1231 Jason Belmonte NSW
