BELMO & FELDMAN STANDOUT PAIR IN PBA MIXED DOUBLES EVENT GOING INTO TOMORROW’S TELEVISED FINAL

The expression ‘couldn’t see their heels for dust’ comes to mind when viewing the standings for tomorrow’s stepladder finals of the PBA Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

Belmo has led from the very first round of this week’s event, and partnered top-qualifier in the women’s division, Michelle Feldman going into the matchplay rounds.

They combined forces to take a commanding lead after the first round, 279 pins ahead of Eugene McCune & Kelly Kulick and left no doubt to their claim to #1 position for the stepladder finals, posting a Baker format matchplay record 7,289 30-game score … a massive 386 pin lead over #2 qualifiers, Wes Malott and Shannon O’Keefe.

The televised stepladder promises exciting viewing, with the first match between #5 and #4 qualifiers, Brian Voss/Diandra Asbaty and Tom Smallwood/Jodi Woessner. The winner of this match will then face #3 qualifiers, Rhino Page/Shannon Pluhowsky.

The outcome of this match will determine which pair meets #2 qualifiers, Malott/O’Keefe, and ultimately the top qualifiers, Belmonte/Feldman.

Belmo & Feldman pipped at the post

The expression ‘couldn’t see their heels for dust’ best describes the standings leading to the stepladder finals of the PBA Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

Aussie two-handed bowler, Jason Belmonte led from the very first round of the event, and partnered top-qualifier in the women’s division, Michelle Feldman going into the matchplay rounds.

The unpredictability of bowling came to the fore however when the fifth qualifying pair of Brian Voss and Diandra Asbaty stormed through their three stepladder games of the televised Final on Sunday, local time. Posting scores of 276-224, 276-227 and 224-202, the Voss/Asbaty duo swiftly eliminated Smallwood/Woessner, Page/Pluhowsky and Malott/O’Keefe to challenge top-seeds Belmonte and Feldman in the championship match.

Beginning strongly with a double, and a stunning 4-7-10 conversion by Asbaty in the seventh frame, the pair denied Belmonte and Feldman the win that many observers had expected. Ringing tens and an open in the fifth saw the title slip from their grip as the Voss/Asbaty train rolled to a 234-212 victory.

“It hurts to lead by so much and lose, but that’s bowling,’ Belmonte observed. “That’s the cruel part of bowling one game for the title, but if it’s your day it can be the beauty of it as well,” he added good-naturedly.

Belmonte returned to the Tour soon after his wife Kimberly gave birth to their first child, determined to position highly, and with 6th, 8th and now 2nd placings – as well as joint champion of the Chris Paul Invitational – he’s on track to achieve his goal of securing the points needed for an exemption in next season’s Tour. Yesterday’s result has elevated the popular Aussie to fifth on the PBA points table.

“He is bowling well and hopes to make good in the next event, moving forward and thinking like a Pro … we’re very proud of him,” his parents commented from Belmo’s home town of Orange, north west of Sydney this morning.

The next leg of the PBA Tour – the 67th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open starts today at Woodland Bowl, Indianapolis, culminating with another live-televised final on Sunday, 28 February.
