Australian Sports Series Final 2008 Format

FINALS Top 16 of qualifying seeded into elimination finals

Here is the Format the Sponsor would like us to use or comment on for the 2008 Australian Sports Series Final to be held on the Gold Coast...

BASED ON 16 LANES 96 ENTRIES

Qualifying
  • Bowlers 15 games in 3 x 5 game appearances
  • 6 Bowlers per pair of lanes bowling 1 game against the other 5 bowlers
  • Head to head 40 for a win 20 for draw + pinfall

Example 6 bowlers on lanes 1&2
1 plays 6
2 plays 5
3 plays 4
1 plays 5
2 plays 4 and so on until all bowlers have played each other once over the 5 games…

Top 32 bowlers from sports series around Australia are seeded into first set of 5 games
Second set of 5 games bowlers seeded by pinfall & points from the first 5 games
Third set of 5 games the same process as second set.
Each appearance is bowled on a different sport pattern…

THE IDEA BEHIND THIS FORMAT IS THAT EVERY GAME YOU PLAY YOU HAVE A DIRECT

2008 SPORTS SERIES NATIONAL FINAL
SPONSOR ANNOUCEMENT

It is with great pleasure we can announce the leading sponsor for the
2008 Sports Series National Final is COCOS DISCOUNT FOOD MARKET IN ASSOCIATION WITH MPMS P/L QLD

Coco’s Discount Food Markets are a supermarket chain established over 5 years ago currently with 11 stores spanning from the Gold Coast /Toowomba
Brisbane /Caboolture & the Sunshine Coast with plans to expand another 20 stores
Over the next 5 years.
They specialize in providing heavily discounted grocery lines and a large range of
Quality fruit and vegetables while also named grocery lines at a very competitive price. We rank ourselves as overall cheaper than any of the larger chain stores.

MPMS P/L QLD is a management company specializing in the overall running of
Supermarkets and providing quality staff to run these supermarkets.

We hope that providing sponsorship to this Sports Series Final will make it the number one tournament in Australia .Australian bowling needs to be bought out of last century and put back on the map. We think with the right support from all bowlers through Australia and might we add overseas this could be the tournament to do it.
All Coco’s Discount Food Markets & Mpms p/l Qld ask is you give us the same support we want to give bowling in Australia.
We put out a challenge to for other sponsors to step forward and throw there support behind this tournament .
With a couple more large sponsors we could have a tournament with a first prize of
$10000.00
This sort of money will draw competitors from overseas and will attract media interest never seen before in Australia.

Regards
Lee Matthey

Nice format Jase

How will you be deciding the "Top 32" from Australian sports series?

Will it be say top 6 from each state or something similar?

Matt

Sounds like a good different format to me.

Will there be a lane change after every game with the entire group moving lanes together. i.e everyone on 1&2 moving to 3&4?

Is there any chance of NZ players being seeded?

Firstly its fantanstic that COCOS DISCOUNT FOOD MARKET IN ASSOCIATION WITH MPMS P/L QLD has alinged itself with this New Era of Bowling in Australia. It's also great to see that the interest in challanging ourselves as bowlers is on the increase with Sport Series Tourneys now in 4 states and growing.

It would be great to get the Tenpin Bowling Show involved as well. (every bit helps)

The format looks a great idea, but how is it to run with 16 lanes with 96 entries? Are we all on at once, which would be 6 on each lane or is it 2 squads of 48 which would be 6 to a pair which you've already stated.

If so, do we bowl both squads on A pattern, then re-seeded to bowl both squads on pattern B and then re-seeded on combined pinfall to bowl on pattern C.

Then the top 16 on pinfall and bonuses from the combined squads goes on to the Finals to compete on pattern D.

Since each pattern will have 32 seeds will the rest (64) be drawn randomally into each group? Also would seeds 1-8 and 17-24 be in Squad A and the rest in Squad B?

With this happening bowlers are going to end up with a short break or long one depending on the draw. Unfortunately there seems no way around it.

Will all 4 patterns be displayed before the event?

Other than that...... Count me in.

hammo

ps Sorry if i have rambled on

I think this is a fantastic development, I would heartily bowl using any format.

Thanks to COCOS DISCOUNT FOOD MARKET IN ASSOCIATION WITH MPMS P/L QLD for stepping up and aligning itself with the various Sports Series around the country.

Only one question how do we decide on the top 32 ?

It would be great to get the Tenpin Bowling Show involved as well. (every bit helps)

There is no way in hell Tony is missing out on this one, even if I have to kidnapp him and take him up to the event Myself! :p

To the major sponsor- COCOS DISCOUNT FOOD MARKET IN ASSOCIATION WITH MPMS P/L QLD the investment into the sport will definately not go unthanked. With the exposure im sure you guys will gain from the event, us bowlers will definately have to make sure there is a benefit from this contribution.

The format sounds awesome. Action from the word go could create a good atmosphere for those involved, but will also give the spectators something good to watch.

Totalbowling has put alot of work into this event, and there isn't any reason why this couldn't develop into a regular premier Australian event. Thanks has to go to Jase and his team for their continuous contribution to the sport.

Cheers!

Thanks for your responses so far,it is fantastic
Jason has given me the job of responsing to questions raised
and I thank him for this opportunity.
(1) lane changes
All 6 bowlers will move together after each game.
(2) Overall seedings would be taken from standing sheets
of all states conducting sports series and any state /NZ
that wishes to run mybe 2 small tournaments/rolloffs on
sports patterns to establise there own seedings.
They should have a vision to start there own series in
2008
(3) PROPOSED BOWLING SCHEDULE
Friday 22nd feb 2008 to be decided
Saturday 23 feb 2008
Squad A 48 BOWLERS
Check in 8.00 bowl 8.30 5 games
Pattern 1
Squad B 48 BOWLERS
Check in 11.00 bowl 11.30 5 games
LANES OILED BETWEEN SQUADS
Squad A 48 bowlers
Check in 14.00 bowl 14.30 5 games
pattern 2
Squad B 48 BOWLERS
Check in 17.00 bowl 17.30 5 games
Day completed
Sunday 24th Feb
Squad A 48 BOWLERS
Check in 8.00 bowl 8.30 5 games
pattern 3
Squad B 48BOWLERS
Check in 11.00 bowl 11.30 5 games
top 16 announced
pattern 4 finals commence 15.00
(4) Top 32 seeded bowlers from sports series/tournaments
would be seeded into Squads A&B
Odd numbers into Asquad Even numbers into B squad
that way we get a even coverage of seeded bowlers through
both squads.
Balance of bowlers drawn at random into both squads.
Once drawn into A or B that is the squad you remain in until
the finals.
Depending on the response from other states and overseas
we could increase the seedings to whatever number we like.
PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR VIEWS ON WHAT YOU THINK !
Regards
Lee

Matt
At this stage until we here from states not currently
running sports series it would be minimum 8 per sports
series states. As I suggested we do have the abilty to
increase the number of seeded bowlers to whatever we
like. It would be fantastic to have every bowler in the
tournament seeded which will eventually happen if
this tournament is supported and ends up a yearly
event
Thanks for your imput / keep it comming
regards
Lee

Thanks Lee

I am holding a final for our top 16 here in WA later in the year. so just needed to find out how many will be seeded so i can plan the format for that event.

Cheers

Matt

Sounds like a great tournament and format even though i haven't bowled a sports series event due to other things that day. It would be great to bowl this tournament and well worth the experience aswell.

Keep it up guys.

Sorry Lee for the hassle but these two statements don't match up.

"Once drawn into A or B that is the squad you remain in until
the finals." from your post.

"Top 32 bowlers from sports series around Australia are seeded into first set of 5 games
Second set of 5 games bowlers seeded by pinfall & points from the first 5 games
Third set of 5 games the same process as second set.
Each appearance is bowled on a different sport pattern…" and this in Jas post.

Will the re seeding be for the combined (96) or just on each squad with the top 16 after pattern A being seeded?

Also will there be something for each leading bowler from each squad on each pattern? Say a bottle of spirit or $$$ where a small sponsor could be involved.

hammo

Thanks hamo
Lets try again
Top32 bowlers from sports series around Australia seeded into first
5 games. Odds into A squad Evens into B Squad giving a fair and even
coverage of seeded bowlers through both squads.
Balance of bowlers drawn at random into both squads.
Once drawn into A or B that is the squad you remain in for the next
2 x 5 games.
SECOND SET OF 5 GAMES
Second set of 5 games bowlers seeded back into their starting squad
by pinfall&points of their first 5 games.
EXAMPLE
========
48 BOWLERS FROM SQUAD A 48 BOWLERS FROM SQUAD B
SEEDED ON PINFALL & POINTS SEEDED ON PINFALL & POINTS
FROM FIRST 5 GAMES. THAT FROM FIRST 5 GAMES. THAT
IS ALL BOWLERS IN THAT IS ALL BOWLERS IN THAT
SQUAD. SQUAD.
THIRD SET OF 5 GAMES
SAME PROCESS AS SECOND SET OF 5 GAMES
One problem I see with this process is we might get bowlers
bowling against each other more than once .
I will run some dummy scores to see how likely this is to occur.
If we go top 16 then random lane draw then the same thing is likely to
occur.
I hope this explains the format a bit better.
As for will there be prizes for top qualifiers for each 5 game block
we are working on things like that and I WILL REPEAT MY
CHALLENGE FOR NEW SPONSORS TO COME ON BOARD BIG OR
SMALL AND SUPPORT WHAT WILL BE THE BIGGEST TOURNAMENT
ON THE AUSTRALIAN CALENDAR
THANKS AGAIN
LEE
COCOS DISCOUNT FOOD MARKETS

Do you have contacts for hotels around the area that visiting states bowlers can stay at Lee?

I am certainly looking at getting a group together to come over for this event, so need to book our stuff early coming from so far away :p
