as much as the parents are 'footing the bill' it does not go to imply the kids actually bowling out there are completely ignorant to the hard facts of life. Sure there are always bills to pay or money to spend on something, BUT the only arguement i'm hearing is that money is the only reason the format should be changed.
So then, why is it that year after year we see the best juniors across the country, funded or not funded by their parents, spend the couple of thousand dollars to compete? No one is forcing the parents to pay up, and as much as there may be the occasional who won't pay up the next year, there is still strong competition.
Changing something would imply it needs improvement. And yet by changing shield to what is suggested, wouldn't improve, infact it would lower the standard of the bowling, because those who are sitting out are sitting out for a reason. Having the level of competition that is out there only encourages all the juniors in the country to strive to be the best they can be. How can we complain about that? Not only does that see the standard of shield remain, it sees those who age out prove their ability as a youth, and eventually, an adult.
The piece of tin that i've been lucky enough to have won with my team twice in my three years of shield, i would never give away. Call it what you want, it is precious to those who win, and although others may not see its importance, if they were to win it, then they would understand. It is an amazing feeling, regardless of the amount of games (yes, i bowled few games the first time we won, and a hell of a lot of games the second time round), and trying to take away that importance isn't even worth arguing.
So for those who want it changed, consider this. Not only would the cost still be just as high, the standard would be lower. If there are so many of you who think winning is not important, look at those who are apart of the winning teams. They are loud, they are proud, and they have a hell of a good time. It is an honour to be apart of a shield team, and to do the best your team can do will always be important.
