Wow, what a weekend of bowling.

The 2010 900global Youth Cup had 48 of the best Australian and Kiwi youth bowlers shoe up in what turned out to be a great tournament from a bowler and a spectator viewpoint.

During qualifying, all bowlers in the field worked out quickly that the right shot, with the right ball and playing the right area of the lane were the keys to making the cut. There were high games that were earned (including an impressive 297 from Matthew Chettleburg (Vic)) but there was also lower games by those who dealt with the oil transition incorrectly.

In the male section, Current Australian Team representitive Stephen Cowland (NSW) was the stand out, averaging an impressive 229.9 for the 10 games. Sam Cooley (NSW) and Scott Robertson (NSW) were 2nd and 3rd with a 215 and a 207 average respectively. Matthew Chettleburg rounded out the top 10 with a 194 average.

In the female section Bec Whiting (Vic) lead the field with a 208 average with a great display of consistent and accurate shotmaking, with Hayley Taylor (QLD) and Jacinta Gilliland (QLD) hot on her heels at 200 and 196 averages. Squeezing in the cut by only 17 pins was Emily Robertson (Vic) with a hard fought 176 average.

After qualifying, the top 10 male and top 8 female bowlers moved through to a matchplay format. Then it was cut to top 5 in each division for a stepladder final. Both qualifying leaders held their positions throughout matchplay with impressive bowling showed by all of the finalists. The key to scoring remained making good shots, and poor shots were punished, with many matches comming down to the wire.

In the first stepladder match (5v4v3), we saw Dion Alexander (SA) take advantage of an open frame from Josh Alvisse in the tenth frame and win by 1 pin, with Matthew Chettleburg finishing in 5th place having low game on the pair. 192 - 191 - 178 were their respective scores.

Emily Robertson held her nerves in the tenth frame to defeat Lexi Nicoll (NSW) and Hayley Taylor 191 - 185 - 180.

Dion then moved onto Sam Cooley and was victorious, with the match again comming down to the tenth frame. Dion defeated Sam 215 to 203. Emily Robertson faced Jacinta Gilliland in the girls and in a high quality display of bowling for the crowd, Emily took the match 249 - 248

The title matches were fought between front running Stephen Cowland and defending male champion Dion Alexander, and Bec Whiting and defending female champion Emily Robertson.

After a nervous start by both bowlers, Bec rattled off a big string of strikes to take her match against Emily 248 to 222, rounding out a great performance all weekend by this exciting up and comming player.

Stephen Cowland never recovered from early open frames in the first match of the male final, with Dion taking the match 213 - 175. As top qualifier Stephen had a right to re-challenge, but was unsuccessfull again to Dion, going down 224 to 198.
