Funky Chicken

Over the weekend of the 7/8&9th September the Mackay Open was held in....Mackay. Unfortunately due to a clash of dates with the South Pacific, numbers were down on last year however the field still contained bowlers of the calibre of Ian Hughes, Damien McAndrew and Jon King who are all Qld Rachuig bowlers.

At the conclusion of the qualifying
(12 Games) on the Saturday the top 16 were as follows:

1. Craig Hembrow (207.8 ave)
2. John Dunn (203.7)
3. Damien McAndrew (203.2)
4. Joseph Nucifora (201.2)
5. Angelo Nucifora (200)
6. Wade Jones (199.2)
7. Frank Nucifora (197.8)
8. Ian Hughes (197.2)
9. Stephen Hunt (197)
10.Paul Atfield (193.1)
11.Ross Ciancio (190.7)
12.Shane Rossberg (190.3)
13.Rob McGrath (189.9)
14.Trent Bosel (189)
15.Rob Kaluci (188.5)
16.Peppi Prior (188.2)

On Sunday the 16 finalists then bowled 15 games head to head. After the first 5 games Paul Atfield at +92 was a clear leader, and looking like he was going to be uncatchable. But then the bowler that time forgot Ian Hughes showed what a true champion he was by reeling off games of 268, 177, 224, 216, 256 and 211 to establish a handy lead over the rest of the field.

A number of bowlers had a decent crack at trying catch Hughsey, with Trent Bosel shooting well to finish 2nd while Stephen Hunt shot +105 over the last 9 games but had given Hughes and Bosel too much start and finished 3rd.

It is always a good tournament when the bowler who was the best on the day finishes 1st, and this was the case in Mackay. After looking a bit shaky on the Saturday, Ian came out on the Sunday and used all of his considerable experience and skill to overwhelm the field and add yet another title to his ever expanding resume'.

The final placings are as follows;
1. Ian Hughes (208.8ave)
2. Trent Bosel (205.5)
3. Stephen Hunt (204.2)
4. Joseph Nucifora (200.1)
5. Paul Atfield (196.4)
6. Ross Ciancio (193.5)
7. Shane Rossberg (191.6)
8. John Dunn (191.4)
9. Angelo Nucifora (189.1)
10.Wade Jones (185.7)
11.Craig Hembrow (183.9)
12.Rob Kaluci (182.5)
13.Damien McAndrew (181.9)
14.Rob McGrath (177.5)
15.Frank Nucifora (179.3)
16.Peppi Prior (174.3)

The lanes were challenging but most people could find a line, and the staff were super efficient and friendly. Overall I would rate the tournament 8/10 and highly recommend it to anyone thinking of coming next year.

Congrats to Hughesy on another win, just lucky papa smurf I wasn't there, ha ha. As for funky chicken, you better keep practising, things aren't looking good for you in November.
