Fairlanes City

yes they have synthetic lanes and approaches. they were done at easter time this year by usher resurfacing. Kegel Lanes same as melville centre and warwick centre.

Well, looks like Fairlanes is finally going.

They disconnected the power from the building a week and a half ago and most of the remaining equipment has been sold and is being removed from the building right now. Demolition is supposed to start in 2 weeks time.

They've changed the plans again, the 14 storey office building has been canned. Now, they want to put up a 27 storey building with the first 5 or 6 floors as office space and the rest are apartments.

For all those who want a last glimpse of this great centre, I managed to get inside there today. Here's a few of the pictures I took.

I've had to brighten up a few of them because there's no power for lighting in the building except the natural light coming in from the windows, etc. and the generator powered lighting Chris Usher had set up where he was removing the synthetic panels from the lanes.

I'll post them as links so they don't fill up the page here.

The last one is the synthetic panels being stacked up in the top carpark.

I was rather surprised that wasn't as much dust and dirt as I expected on the machines, etc. considering the centre has been closed for over 2 years.

Thanks, Clinton.

Here's a few more I took today:

2 pictures of the workshop behind lane 24:

This was the workshop on the 17th December, 2006, 4 days before the bowl closed ---> http://i40.tinypic.com/ftkf1j.jpg

Another one of the kitchen in the cafe:

The smokers room - later to become the birthday party room:

The 'Pie Link' Internet cabinet is still there, as you can see. Just an empty cabinet, though. The PC was removed from it.

Half of the old League Awards board that was behind the Glow Bowling sign they had up on the wall next to lane 24 players' area:

Standing at the office doorway looking in:

The 'building' you can see in the window is actually the artist's impression of the 14 storey office block they were going to build there. Its on the large advertising board attached to the front of the bowl. It must be 'semi transparent', the light is shining through it from outside. Looked like a solid board from Adelaide Terrace.

------------------------

Chris Usher is just taking the synthetic overlays off the lanes. The old, wood lanes underneath will be demolished with the building. Not sure about the synthetic pindecks though?

A crew is arriving Monday morning to take what they can from 10 of the pinsetters for a centre in the Eastern States (can't remember the name). Just the deck assemblies, turrets and anything else they can get out of the door. The rest of those 10 pinsetters will probably go with the building when its demolished.

Someone has expressed interest in the other 14 pinsetters but, if they haven't taken what they want in the next 2 weeks, those machines will also probably go with the building. Same with the Frameworx scoring system, I assume.

Well very interesting but sad photos in a way :(
I have a lot of great memorys as did most of us in Fairlanes.
But I guess life go's on and we have Joondalup to look forward to although will never be the same.
Vince.
:)

Thanks, Vince.

By the way, if anyone wants copies of these pictures... the originals are a lot better quality (they're between 1 and 3MB in size) because I've drastically reduced them here to save loading times, I'm at Craigie Bowl on Monday and Thursday evenings. :)

hi carl,

took some photos myself on tuesday afternoon. met the S.A crew taking lanes 15-24. also met the people involved in removing 1-14. i couldnt believe the mount of crap left in the place down the back and clutch kits and scissor assys left in parts storeroom!

cheers,
Paul

yeh ill post them when i upload them from my phone.:)
i had never seen there wood lanes before. shame its all going to be bulldozed.
everything in that building chris usher owns. no one wants frameworks scoring system, or the wood lanes. pindecks and synthetics were taken by chris and co. not sure where though, saw them all loading the truck last tuesday.

The roof was coming off before the australia day long weekend, and I heard that demolition was starting on the 1st Feb.

synthetics were taken away, wood lanes stay and get turned into the ground. 10 lanes were brought by sum guys in S.A they dismantled and took them away. the other 14 were stripped for bits and pieces. otherwise they get demolished unfortunately. what a waste! im not sure who got the century 100 lane machine that i saw in the service isle.

Ah, yes. The good old battery powered Century 100. That machine was the first oiling machine Craigie Bowl had when they opened in 1989. The buff is missing from the machine in my picture from 3 weeks ago. Don't know where it went?

I went past the bowl a few days ago. What a mess. Looks like most or all of the ceilings have been pulled down after the roof was taken off... lots of daylight inside. 2 large holes have been knocked in the wall next to lane 24 to provide access to and from the top carpark. The front windows to the former smokers room have also been pulled down.

I might be down there again on Sunday. I'll take some more pictures. I won't be able to get inside the building anymore but I should be able to get some good pictures from outside.

While I'm here - Brian, the former head mechanic from Fairlanes is getting married again tomorrow (Valentine's Day) at The Vines resort. Congratulations, Brian.

I drove past yesterday, about half demolished. Such a sad sight.

Went down there again today (Sunday). What a mess. Here's some of the pictures I took:

Not much left now. After they finish clearing away the front of the building, they'll remove the main floor (where the lanes, etc. were), then they'll remove the 'barber pole' supporting pillars from the bottom carpark.

Some of the ceiling still remains over the approach and players' area but its collapsed down at a crazy angle. You can also see some of the scorer consoles standing.

I see the control counter is still there. Standing defiant until almost the very end.

My all time favourite bowling centre. Such a shame to see it end this way, but I guess given the land values in the middle of the city, it was inevitable.

So many great memories, both from a bowling and personal perspective.

I'm with you Brenton, very sad to see those pictures.Had some great times in Perth. One of the best tournaments I've bowled in.Great people in David,Val and Sue.The greatest crowds.Loved playing up to them, especially when playing against those West Australians.
Cheers Lovey
