Bowling Tragic

Businesses asked to support memorial bowl
Thursday, 10 April 2003

Gayle Dunn wants the memory of her son and his mate to live on via the construction of a memorial bowling alley and youth centre in Ulladulla. Gayle lost her son Craig and his surfing mate Danny Lewis in the Bali bombing of October 2002. She now has a burning ambition to do something for the young people of Ulladulla

Following a number of community meetings, a committee has been formed and now Gayle's vision looks set to become a reality by October. The committee is now calling for support from local businesses to get the centre off the ground. All businesses and households will receive a letter in the mail over the next few weeks asking for financial or in kind support. "A questionnaire will also be included so the entire community can have input into the project," committee spokesperson Cathy Dunn said. "The recent public meeting shows that the whole town is for the complex, being an attraction for the youth, a venue for sport and social activities as well as providing work opportunities. "Currently under investigation is the potential location of the complex to suit the community's needs.

"Featured in the complex will be a ten-pin bowling alley, offering leagues for all ages, an added tourist attraction for the region. Other facilities being considered is a general hall for use by both sporting and community groups. "Along with recreational facilities for dancing, gymnastics, drama, music, physical culture, clubhouses and meeting areas for local sporting groups. In addition the complex will provide a vocational training venue for Ulladulla youths with traineeship and other employment opportunities," Mrs Dunn said. "The complex project will be valuable to the community as a whole, particularly as it will offer a recreational outlet for the young people in our region. "The recently formed memorial youth group is already surveying High School students and teachers for the real needs of our local youths. "Youth members of this group cover from teenagers to 25 years, including representatives from both local high schools. Friends and family youth members of the late Craig Dunn and Danny Lewis have also taken a role within the memorial group.

"The project will also be establishing a youth sponsorship for local community projects and activities." Entries are currently being sought for the naming competition including a complex logo. "This is a chance for budding youth artists to design a corporate logo for the complex. "There are some great prizes that have been given for the competition. Entries will be judged by Danny's sister Nichole Lewis," Mrs Dunn said.
