Perfect Game wins luxury prize for teenage tenpin bowler

A highlight of last weekend’s BMW NSW Country Open in Orange was a flawless 300 game by Stephen Cowland from Blackbutt, near Wollongong. The 18-year old’s perfect game was witnessed by a packed house, with the crowd of competitors and supporters swelled further by local and interstate bowlers and officials who had gathered for the WBW World Bowler of the Year presentation function that evening for local hero, Jason Belmonte.

Adding to the thrill of the perfect game was the magnificent prize won by young Illawarra bowler, courtesy of the tournament sponsor, BMW Central West Prestige. Stephen and his fellow competitors had admired a stunning display of the latest BMW vehicles parked at the entrance to the Orange Tenpin Bowling Centre but the perfect game and luxurious prize seemed somewhat remote when Cowland shot a 179 in the first game of the tournament.

However, he recovered strongly and in the final game of the first day’s play Cowland rolled the magic twelve strikes, entitling him to a 5-star weekend driving in a BMW 735li series vehicle and two nights’ accommodation at the Sheraton on the Park Hotel in Sydney, plus $1,000 cash spending money with the compliments of Orange Bowl proprietors, Marisa and Aldo Belmonte.

A 299 game on the eve of his 18th birthday two days earlier had set the stage for another memorable weekend in Orange where Cowland has enjoyed previous success by winning the Junior Country Cup there last November. “Stephen really enjoys coming to bowl in Orange”, said his mother Cheryl. “And he’ll be travelling to the United States in August after being awarded a sport Scholarship to the Baptist University in Missouri”, she added proudly.
