Re: NSW Storm Sports Series No6 - Bowler's Edge Pattern Preview

G'Day Sport Bowling Fans!

It is with great regret that I announce that I cannot get a Competitive Edge video preview of this event's pattern happening in time. Circumstance, software and sickness have left me exhausted, frustrated and just plain out of time. (Even more than usual on all counts.) It is a testament to my new found patience that my wife's laptop did not learn to fly this evening.

So here's a precis from my notes that I have read into a microphone several times to then lose as random electrons. (It's late and the idea of spending the next few hours editing video is too much to bear.)

Sport Series Event 6 - Gosford City Bowl
(Well, it was called that last time I was there, but it had wood lanes then too, so that may have changed.)

  • Lane Surface: Murrey Synthetic - Medium Friction
  • Pattern Length: 35ft - Short
  • Pattern Volume: 19mls - Low (Are we seeing a theme here..?)
  • Pattern Ratio: 2.3:1 - Very flat, until you consider that all of that ratio happens from the 6th board out.
The pattern is tougher than than the U.S. Open in the middle, so for God's sake, don't stand 20 and bowl 10. You'll just have an awful day and turn the pattern into a freak show for the rest of us. Sorry to be so blunt, but Macarthur played so badly on the short, because everyone played the wrong part of the lane, pushed the high volume to the right and turned the breakpoint zone into something like a railway switching yard. If we all want to improve and therefore have more fun, I feel that it's only fair to get this information out there. Let's play smarter together.

So Where Do I Play?
Well, I'm glad you asked! As the blend on this pattern is outside 5, that's where we should be looking. All you crankers, if this pattern plays something like it should, do not be tempted to swing it out the edge. Just keep your hand quiet, use something straighter and play straight up the boards. (Well, pictures of boards on synthetics...) Me, I'm planning on starting with a urethane ball up 3-4 board and figuring it out from there. There's going to be a shed load of friction downlane, so don't get too concerned about throwing it in the gutter. That will require a miss worthy of zero, so it's all good.

So I'll use my big hooking ball to get back from out there..?
NO! There's enough hook built into this pattern and you want something that moves gradually and stays alive downlane. Strong balls will flip and die on this pattern, unless you either throw it really hard or with nothing on it. Use a ball that has a medium read of the lane. Straighter will be greater. Very unusual for the Central Coast, but there you go... (Only been that way since about 1982.)

What adjustments will be required?
Make small moves into the oil when you see the ball pick up too soon. Use angles that help you maintain the same breakpoint down the lane.

Even though I sound pretty grumpy in this, I'm actually looking forward to this event. I think that the pattern will play well and should have dependable friction down the back. I just wish I wasn't Captain Hayfever (He types while snuffling and reading his rant through teary red eyes.)

Hopefully the pollen count isn't so nasty up the coast. At least I'll get to see my family! Watch out, the place is crawling with Dousts!

See you all there!

Cheers,
Jason

(Time for a cider and some sleep...)
