Nable leading at Empire State Classic

This is from PWBA.com ... Maxine Nable is currently leading the Empire State Classic after 24 games of Matchplay. There is a further 16 games to go .. 8 of which started around 1am this morning AEST and the rest will start around 830am Sunday morning our time. At the conclusion of match play, the field is cut to the top five bowlers who will compete in stepladder finals.

This is the second last event of the Spring Tour on the PWBA. The last event (Greater Syracuse Classic) is on 26th-30th June. The Tour resumes for the Summer Tour with the first event July 13th-19th being the Dallas Open.

NABLE STILL ON TOP AT EMPIRE STATE PWBA CLASSIC

LATHAM, N.Y. – Maxine Nable, Australia, continued her hot pace to hold the lead at the Empire State PWBA Classic at Bowlers Club in Latham, N.Y. Friday evening. Nable won six of her eight head to head matches, averaging a 233.38 for the tournament and holds a 86-pin lead over second place Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif.

“I’m pretty happy with the way I’m bowling right now,” said a smiling Nable, “Being the leader is a place I’ve not been in lately, so I’m not thinking about anything except winning matches.”

Nable didn’t pop for any large scores during the evening, but managed to bowl enough to win the majority of her matches with a high game of 248 and a low of 193.

16-year tour veteran Barrette won five of her matches this evening with a high game of 279 to hold on to the second spot and 92 pins ahead of third place Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.

“Experience does help in match play, I’ve been through it all and I keep a positive, open mind,” said Barrette, “With the scoring high, as it’s been this week, it’s very important to keep winning your matches.”

Rounding out the top five are Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah, who went 5-3 in match play to hold down fourth place and just two pins behind her in fifth is Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y.

Tennelle Grijalva, Yorba Linda, Calif., delighted the crowd this evening when she stroked the first 300 game of the tournament in her seventh game of the eight-game block.

One local Albany bowler, Linda Follett, survived the cut to match play starting the evening block in 23rd. She put together a 2-6 win-loss record for this evening and is currently in 24th place.

BARRETTE IS THE TOP SEED FOR FINALS AT EMPIRE STATE PWBA CLASSIC

LATHAM, N.Y. – Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., held on to her lead to claim the top seed for the televised finals in the Empire State PWBA Classic at Bowlers Club in Latham, N.Y. Saturday night. Barrette continued her march to the top by compiling a 19-5 won-lost record and averaging 233.33 overall.

Barrette is fourth on the PWBA all-time career earnings list with $947,993 just $52,007 shy of the million dollar mark.

After the first round, Barrette was situated in 12th place, moving up to 4th by round two, and 2nd place at the cut to the top twenty-four match play finalists. During match play, she maintained her hold on second for the fourth round and made her move to the top after the fifth round. Barrette will be looking for her first title of the year.

“I’d much rather be first or second for the show,” said Barrette, “Sometimes those shootout matches can be pretty tough to get out of.”

The other four athletes looking to take the title from the top seed are 2nd seed Maxine Nable, Australia, 3rd seed Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., 4th seed Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. and 5th Kim Terrell, Antioch, Calif.

The finals will be broadcast live on ESPN at 4:30 PM eastern. Fifth, fourth and third seeded athletes will compete in a three way shoot out with the winner advancing to meet the second place bowler. The winner of that match will meet the top seed to determine the championship.
