Malaysia will host the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay on April 21 in Kuala Lumpur, with a number of prominent sports personalities making a bee-line to be part of the prestigious event.

The relay will begin at Dataran Merdeka with a simple opening ceremony, with the torch bearers running to Merdeka Stadium, before passing through many significant buildings in the city.

The relay will be passing Wisma OCM, City Hall Building, Parliament House, National Museum, National Mosque, Old Central Railway Station, Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and KL Tower before reaching Merdeka Stadium, according to the itinerary of the run released by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).

After a short recess at Merdeka Stadium, the relay will head to KL Tower, where the Torch will be taken to the top of the Tower for a scenic aerial view of the Tower before moving on to the KLCC.

Some of the outstanding athletes leading the Torch Run are Olympic Games medallists Razif, Jalani and Rashid Sidek, Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock, all from the badminton sports, while other notable names are women world squash champion Nicol David, bowler Shalin Zulkifli , swimmers Lim Keng Liat, Nurul Huda Abdullah, former national football team skipper Datuk Soh Chin Aun, runner Marina Chin and diver Bryan Nickson Lomas.

Some of the big names in Malaysian sports like former OCM president Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah and current OCM president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar have also been nominated as torch bearers.

There will be a total of 80 torch bearers from participating partners, with six runners each from Coca-Cola, Samsung and Lenovo while the China Embassy in Kuala Lumpur had nominated four participants.

OCM secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the remaining 58 torch bearers would be nominated by the council.

In conjunction with the Torch Relay in Kuala Lumpur, the OCM together with Coca-Cola, Samsung and Lenovo are organising a 2008 Olympic Torch Relay Fun Run on April 20, he said.

The Fun Run with only two categories -- males and females over the age of 13 -- will have no official placings as all participants are running for fun and to usher in the spirit of Olympics.

The run will be flagged off at Dataran Merdeka and will cover a 5km distance along Jalan Raja to Jalan Mahameru, Jalan Sultan Sallehuddin, Lebuhraya Mahameru, Jalan Parliament and back to Jalan Raja and Dataran Merdeka.
