The seventh stop in the Qld Wide Bay Tour was 2009 Harbour City Classic in Gladstone. The event attracted 60 entries which is another increase on the previous years. There were 12 games of qualifying and it was Stuart Crowley who started his tournament with a great 300 game that topped the qualifying sheets with a 229.6 average. The cut was down to 24th and getting the last spot in stage 2 was local Ross Matthews with a 199.8 average.

The top 24 then completed another 5 games before cutting to the top 12. We then saw Brandon Qualifchefski jump to the lead. Chris Carney who made the long drive from Townsville just held onto 12th from a very fast finishing Alicia Melton who was the top placed female.

The top 12 then dropped their pinfall and competed in 11 games head to head matchplay. After 3 games it looked to be all over with Darryl Alford jumping out to a 150 pin+ lead. But it was at that time in game 4 that Brando put together a championship winning run of 1255 for his next 5 games to distance himself from the field. There was stiff resistance from Ian Phelan and Shayne Melton who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, but eventually Brando was able to gap himself from the his pursuers and capture the Harbour City Classic for consecutive years.

Some notable achievements over the weekend were….. Stuart Crowley with his 3rd career 300 and getting a new Hammer Bowling Ball from Animal’s Pro Shop. Dale Warren with 299 (almost two 300’s in a week). Highest placed local was Dominic Carswell with a high game of 255 and finishing in 22nd. Tyrone Watson who bowls every event made his first cut in18 months and looked good on the lanes. Josie Sommer picked up her second lot of cash for the year as second lady outside the cut.

Remember everyone that the last event is the Charlie Greyson Memorial Open on at the Sunshine Coast. This event will be full, so make sure you get a deposit in to avoid the disappointment of missing out on what will be a great event.
