Rodentus scientificus
The Burdekins' Sam Nucifora, who wasn't going to bowl until winning his spot with a 289 in the Mike Carney Skins on Friday night, blew away the rest of the field in the Mercure Inn Sun City Open today. Sam averaged just over 226 for the 19 matchplay games, good for 15 wins and a 257 pin margin over second placed Trent Bosel, also from the Burdekin. Townsvilles' Rob Buckley was third, one pin back, just ahead of a fast finishing Shaun Dunn (Mackay) and Angelo Nucifora (Bkin). Defending champ Steve Hunt had telephone numbers thrown at him all day, finishing in seventh with just 6.5 wins. Highest lady was Leigh Harris (Mackay) in 14th place. Qualifying saw some high-priced casualties, including Calcutta topweight George Frilingos, and everyone else from south of Mackay. It also saw the $1000 on offer for a perfect game go to local junior Aaron Copp, crunching the 12-bagger in game 3 of A squad, and backing it up with 299 two games later. Juniors Kate Murry, Kirsten McKell and Katherine Doran all cut in the womens division, and with young guns Aaron, Shaun Dunn, Adam Neilly and Brad Carr making the mens cut, the future of bowling up here is looking pretty good.
