Thumb !What Thumb.?

I bowl in a house run league in Brissy MON night,
there are 5 young guys of Asian decent all bowling without their thumb
in the ball, supa hook not alot of control.
who is teaching this?
is it happening alot else where?
or do they just think it looks cool?
its wrong i'm thinkin:confused..:confused

my brother doesn't use his thumb. He gets a lot of hook, and some control. I try to get him to try with his thumb, but the ball goes dead straight, so he goes back to no thumb.
He saw a video of someone bowling no thumb just before starting to bowl, and never looked back.
I think he just likes how much it hooks.
