Postcard from Europe...tournaments & sport bowling.

Hi all,
had the chance to get to play in Denmark and in Europe's biggest event, the Frolunda Super 6 over the past 10 days.

George F and Craig Bourke played last year in the Dan Bowling Tour. 3 Tournaments using 8 game formats with the Danish masters having a top 48 final.
Great fun, lane conditions were just like home, more in the middle, not much on the outside. Lots of bowlers..about 250, and just like home the scores were fairly high, but I hate to say it just like home the lefty's dominated winning all three events in 3 different centres.

The danish are also learning that when you don't oil the outside of the lane, everyone needs to play inside, and with little air-con the righthand shot lasted about 5 to 6 games. One event had 12 out of top 15 lefthanded, the main event had the the lucky guys running top 4. I ran 17th and picked up a whopping §200 bucks (1st was eight grand, prizefunds are a lot more top heavy)

Next stop, Gothenburg, Sweden. This is the big one, with 1st place §70,000 Aussie and 48th getting nearly §2,000. Qualfying is 6 games re entry, only 500 bucks for your 1st attempt and 300 for each one after.
Over 200 entrants, sport bowling lane conditions, Europes best and PBA Pros, including Pete Weber, Brian Himmler, Robert Smith.

Sport lane conditions from Kegel were far from what I expected. After 5 years of testing Kegel have gone back to shorter patterns, with plenty in the heads(50 units at 15 feet), but only to 37 feet. The kicker is that the condition is nearly flat, there is No such thing is hold, but there is plenty of hook if you want it, based on the distance. Kegel have drawn a line in the sand, use a ball that doesn't flare as much and the shot will last longer and you'll get less overreaction, don't and you maybe seeing the doctor about a shoulder reconstruction.

Very fair shot for left and right, with 1315 for 6 making the top 48. I made the right angle choice and shot 1368 first attempt(thank goodness, I couldn't afford many more)

Format was top 48, bowl 6 cut to top 24, bowl 4 more cut to 12, bowl 4 more cut to top 6 stepladder.

Made the first cut to 24 then bowled 2 bad games when I needed it and finished 18th, got back nearly 3 grand so I broke even on the airfare and entries..could have been worse.

Tim Mack was just to good, and led from the 2nd game, the stepladder match had the mack truck at his best and was one of the great one game matches I had ever seen beating Kimmo Lehtonen from Finland 236 to 233.

The finals format put real emphasis on EVERY frame, lanes were re oiled after 6 games so no side had the the lane open up or shut down. Pressure was on as the scores were so tight, just 40 more pins over the 10 games and I was in the top 12(and min 6 grand) Playing alongside a legend like Pete Weber also put a little pressure on....that guy can use the whole lane, and I mean board 1 on the left to board 1 on the right.... incredible, guy can make you look like you have never hooked a ball.

Had a great night out with Tim, who shouted dinner of course, then our car got broken into and every thing was stolen, passport, tickets, some clothes, balls. Got the balls back, funny they dropped them, but now need to spend 2 days in London to get a new passport.

Bummer way to end a great trip, see you at the SPC, heard a rumour about a large American with full intent to make amends for missing the cut last year...
Most of all, looking forward to seeing the 2 most important things in my life...Sue and Sam.
Frawls.

Frawls

Thanks for the update, I've been searching for ages to get the results from Sweden. The pattern you bowled on sounds like what they put down in Malaysia, 37ft and backends flying. The guy from Kegle said that was the toughest condition they could put down to make things fair.

I'm guessing the big American who's venturing down our way is Timmay! Tell Tim I'll take him out for a soda when I see him in Melbourne, I can't guarantee though nice cafes such as the Library or that Rhino place. Congrats anyway, you always manage to pull something out of the hat to balance the bank account. See you in 2 weeks.

I can see me having to spend a fair bit of tmie at the casino in Melbourne .. seeing as i'm the new found "good luck charm"

Hey George isn't your nickname Timmmmmmay ??!?!?!

Frawls,

Thanks for the in depth report on the European bowling scene. maybe it'll open the eyes of "our" lane technicians who have contol of the oiling machines. And well done mate, it's always nice to get a free trip somewhere.

Well done Frawls and a congrats to Tim.

Those european events sound very enjoyable to compete in.

SPC is looking to be very challenging.

Talk to you at SPC.
