2007 WBW Bowler of the Year, Jason Belmonte has packed his bags again to fly to the United States for a busy month competing in the sport he loves. First stop on Belmo’s trip will be the “Boot Hill” tournament in Las Vegas, billed as ‘Competitive Scratch Bowling at its Best’. The four-day event is hosted at South Point Bowling Centre and involves four events with four different formats and conditions.

Before flying to Indiana for the PBA Denny’s World Championships, Belmonte has been invited to join bowling legends from Scandinavia, Europe, Asia and South America in a 5-day international coach/instructor training seminar at the United States Bowling Congress headquarters in Milwaukee from 12-16 February. “The vision of this project is for more coaches and athletes to get the vital bowling information that they need, delivered from reputable international coaches,” said USBC COO Kevin Dornberger.

“Developing elite athletes throughout the world is crucial to the sport’s future…the newly trained coaches will certify USBC coaches in their home countries and regions who in turn will develop more high-level bowlers. “Those athletes will increase the level of bowling competition around the world, which will help reach the ultimate goal of securing a place for bowling in the Olympic Games,” he added.

Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis is the PBA Tour venue for the Denny’s World Championship, and fellow Aussie bowler Andrew Frawley will join Belmo in a tilt at this year’s event from 18-24 February. After 18 games of qualifying, there will be an initial cut to the top 25% of the field, and following a further nine games, a cut to the top 40 with the top eight bowlers advancing to the Super 16. The Super 16 consists of this top eight after 27 games of qualifying, and eight winners from the Round of 16 – full details can be found on the official PBA website www.pba.com

Belmonte has already flown thousands of kilometres this year to compete in tournaments in Asia and the Middle East, and this month’s American tour is a prelude to another trip planned by Belmo and Jason Walsh to the USA in March for the US Open in New Jersey. The Brunswick Euro Challenge that Belmo won in 2006 also beckons the globetrotting young athlete, who will need to make a short detour via Paris for the 2008 event.

Any chance on seeing him in action over there Tony. Does anyone know if any of these Tournaments will be aired in Australia?

Cheers Julie
