The inaugural Garden City New Year Open has been completed today at Garden City Lanes in Toowoomba.
The tournament has been a resounding sucess, with many of the competitors full of praise for the professional manner in which the tournament has been conducted.

Saturday qualifying of 12 games, saw the field cut to the top 24.
The early leader after Squad A was Ian Schuler with +243, followed by Zane Que +170, and Barry Fagg +104.
Squad B was considered the stronger of the three squads, and this proved to be correct with 7 players over +100.
Jason Walsh +306 led narrowly from Michael Little +302. Robbie Muller +232, Brandon Qualischefski +183, Cameron Walsh +139, David Turnage +125, Kelly Kantor +121.
Squad C saw the tournament drawcard step up to the plate. Andrew Frawley then proceeded to lead qualifying with +336.
Andrew Christopher +133, Carl Van Bockel +128, Steve Hampson +117, George Frilingos +115, were other contendors.
Others to make the first cut were, Robbie Buckley, Brian Pilkington, Ian Hughes, Tony Hamilton, Lisa Que, Jon King, Barry Walsh, Phillip Fagg, and Carl Bottomley (+38)rounded out the top 24.
28 of the 60 entrants were over the card, which is testament to the condition of the lanes, albeit everyones least favourite surface, Guardian.
A further 6 games were bowled Sunday morning, with the field then cut to 12.
Matchplay competitors were:
Jason Walsh +470
Andrew Frawley +442
Michael Little +437
Brandon Qualischefski +413
David Turnage +360
Cameron Walsh +288
Robbie Muller +281
Ian Schuler +236
Ian Hughes +228
George Frilingos +219
Jon King +210
Robbie Buckley +180

The matchplay section saw a lot of jostling for positions in the top 4, and in the end Andrew and Jason switched positions to see Andrew as top seed for the stepladder. Brando and Mick also switched positions to be 3 & 4 seeds respectively. The bolter of the field was Jon King who jumped into the final stepladder position in front of the unlucky Dave Turnage, who opened up in matchplay with games of 225, 234, 224, 219, 223, 210 for only 1 win.

Game 1 of matchplay was unfortunately Brando's worst game of the weekend. Jon struggled in the heat of battle and Mick cruised to victory in the three way match, 258 - 188 - 154.
Game 2 was a tight affair with Mick holding the edge for most of the game until an open in the ninth game Jason a sniff of victory. Jason struck and Mick washed out, to give him a big look in, but Jason was unable to make the double in the tenth and Mick coolly spared the 1-2-4-10 to take the game 224 - 204.
Then the Final. Two game total pinfall.
What a match.
Frawls opened up with 226 to Mick's 174 to lead by 52 after the first game. Mick then changed equipment and immediately hit the target.
Frawls still had a 16 pin lead going into the tenth, with both players having strikes in the 8th and 9th frames. Mick slotted the first in the 10th, and then Frawls pushed wide to leave the 2-7. Still anyones title.
Then the unthinkable.
Frawls only took the 7 pin, and all Mick had to do was hit the pins with his second shot.
Final scores were Michael Little 174 & 246 for 420, Andrew Frawley 226 & 189 for 415.

The inaugural Garden City New Year Open Champion is Michael Little who averaged 220.93 for the tournament.
Well done Mick!!!!

Hope to see you all next year.
