2006 South Pacific Classic – AMF Super Six Round 5

Sunday 17th September 2006 – The 28-lane centre at AMF Moorabbin played host to the prestigious 2006 South Pacific Classic where 22 women and 70 men battled it out to represent Australia at the 2006 AMF World Cup in Venezuela.

This event forming part of the Tenpin Bowling Australia National Rankings Tour also attracted double ranking points with entries from around Australia, The Philippines and Hong Kong.

Men’s Stage 1 Qualifying – fresh from his bronze medal performance at the Men’s World Championship, Jarrod Lean of New South Wales, took an early lead with scores of 229 and 299 in only the first block. However, Australian national youth team member Michael Zentveld was the standout performer on the first day averaging 227. Queenslanders filled the first 3 spots with youngster Hamish Rogers, +172 and Carl Bottomley, +143, giving Zentveld something to thing about.

Into day two and Zentveld, +374, continued his stand at the top of the leader board, Queensland’s Brandon Qualischefski, +345, impressed with his last 5 games of 248, 220, 279, 231 & 268 to move into second, while former multiple AMF World Cup winner Paeng Nepomuceno, The Philippines, showed that he still has what it takes to move into third at +299.

Men’s Stage 2 Qualifying – the top 28 men from stage 1 returned on Saturday evening in a 6 game shoot out to make the top 14. Zentveld, +511, momentarily let his guard down but recovered well with a 232 & 287 finish to secure the first Eliminator Final bye. Nepomuceno, +410, continued to dominate the left hand side of the lanes to secure the second bye, while Victorian Mac Stewart, +368, improved to third followed closely by Qualischefski, +359, Jarrod Lead, +346, sandgropper Michael Muir, +342, Andrew Frawley, +325, and Jason Walsh, +300.
