A small field of bowlers battled it out over the weekend for the tittle of Northern NSW Open Champion.
Queenslander, Brian Pilkington made a bright start with an opening 480 block. however, it didnt' take long for the bowlers to feel the effects of the tough conditions, as set out under the TBA Rankings policy, on the normally high scoring Grafton lanes. The main talking point from the bowlers was that "the policy", although in its infancy, is experiencing a number of teething problems which do need to be ironed out.
It was to be Jason Walsh who led the way following the 14 games of qualifying, with a 204.8 average, with Ashley clark the only other bowler "over the card" with a 201.4 ave. George Frilingos was 3rd on a 197.3 ave while Chris Slatery made a late charge averaging 213for his final 6 games to finish 4th with a 196.4 ave. Phill Ramsay, Damien McAndrew, Emma Rutten, Brian Pilkington, Sam Nuciforia Jnr and Ross Sanson rounded out the top 10 finalist with pinfall carrying over to matchplay.
During matchplay it was to be the consistent scoring of Jason which saw him prevail. With an 8 and 1 win/loss record it was always going to be difficult for anyone to remove Jason from the top spot although he was momentarily overtaken by Ashley after the first game of matchplay with Ashley bowling a 260 for a victory over Sam.
The highlight of matchplay was however, the performance of Emma. The talented left-hander was the only bowler to make a charge towards the top with 7 of her 9 games being 200 plus, giving her a 7 and 9 win/loss record. Emma made the move from 7th position at the start of play to eventually finish second behind Jason.
On behalf of the Centre, I would like to thank everyone who supported the tournament. It is fair to say that next year will bring a change in format and "hopefully" a revision of the lane condition policy to see this tournament grow to be bigger and better. The tournament is also likely to be moved to a "cooler" time of the year.
