Davy Throws 280 To Win Cannington Classic

Luke Dick could be excused for thinking he had the 2004 Cannington Classic in the bag. With a 45 pin lead going into the 15th and last game of Matchplay, if he bowled well it was going to take something special to beat him. He could be excused for thinking a 226 game a 20 pin bonus would be enough. But South Australia Brenton Davy had other ideas in throwing a 280 game (plus 20 bonus pins) to take the 2004 Cannington Classic by 9 pins - the second time in as many tournaments the tournament has come down to the last frame.

Luke Dick, a 20 year old bowler from Perth, Western Australia was not disappointed by his performance - in what was his first cut in a Major Adult Tournament. "I didn't have any huge expectations coming into this event - my main goal was to cash. I never even thought i'd make the cut." Dick hit the lead with 2 games to go in Matchplay taking the lead from eventual third place George Frilingos. "I was a bit nervous about 15 minutes before Matchplay, I felt a little out my league with all the big names in the field - all the bowlers I grew up watching on TV as a kid. I had to refocus when I got close to the lead and remind myself there was still a long way to go and that anything could happen."

Anything did happen - his name was Brenton Davy. The ex policeman turned proshop operator threw an almost faultless 280 game - strike, spare then 10 in a row to win by 9 pins from the unlucky youngster.

"I mentioned to Paul Trotter before the last game that I thought I "needed them all" in the last game to have a chance." Davy said after his win. "Luckily 11 out of 12 was enough."

Davy's achievement was even more amazing that the machine kept spitting pins out into the gutter, meaning that his game was continually interrupted by staff going down the lanes to retrieve the wayward pins. "That was a little off putting," Davy said, "But I got there in the end."

Davy knows what it is about to throw a game under pressure. He threw a 300 game in the Manhattan Super Classic several years ago for $200,000 AUD, the largest payout in Australian Bowling history.

Davy averaged 229.16 for the tournament, Dick averaged 228.87 both bowlers finishing with an 11-4 Win-Loss record in Matchplay, andthird place Queenslander George Frilingos averaged 229.58. Frilingos started Matchplay with 6 wins from 6 matches and was leading the tournament. However he only had 1 victory from his last 9 games, to finish with a disappointing 7-8 Win-Loss record. This was Frilingos last event in Australia before heading overseas to compete in the Euro Med Storm Challenge in Manila and the Brunswick Euro Challenge in Athens, Greece.

Andrew Lloyd, who led qualifying throughout the tournament fell away to finish in 10th place.

Umm, correction to your report mate. . .

Luke hit the front with 2 games to go (game 13).

Well done Brenton you worked hard to win the Cannington Cup.
Congratulations.

Thanks all for the kind words.

IN my speech, I forgot to acknowledge AMF for not slashing the prizefund too badly. Given there was a shortfall of 33 players, the prizefund was remarkably generous. I would imagine that AMF took quite a loss on the event, specially since there was an extra $300 payout to Carl for his 300 as well.

Congrats to Luke as well. It was an incredibly mature performance for someone so young. Keep it up.
