BELMO SHOOTS RECORD BREAKING 8-GAMES AT BOWLING WORLD CUP

St Petersburg: Jason Belmonte is bowling up a storm, shooting a record-breaking 8-game series of 2038 in the final round of qualifying at the 2007 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in St Petersburg, Russia.

The 24 year-old Australian came out of the blocks on fire this morning with a 279 game, then posted lines of 268, 243, 237, 258, 256, 269 and 228 (238.88 ave) to overtake the record set last year by fellow two-handed bowler, Osku Palermaa from Finland by 7 pins.

Bill Hoffman, who finished third overall at the BWC in Honduras in 2003, finished 252 pins behind Belmonte with a 231 average, securing the American second placing going into tomorrow’s semi-final. Andres Gomes from Colombia, Petteri Salonen of Finland, Marcelo Suartz of Brazil, Michael Schmidt of Canada, Paul Moor of England and Thomas Gross of Austria round out the final top eight placings for tomorrow’s best-two of three-games single-elimination matches.

An open frame in the final game cost Norway’s Glenn-Morten Pedersen a berth in the semi-finals, after missing the cut by just 4 pins. Runner-up at the BWC in Latvia in 2002, Remy Ong from Singapore, was also disappointed to miss the cut, finishing a further 17 pins behind Pedersen.

In the women’s division earlier today, Australia’s Ann Maree Putney also posted a strong 8-game series of 1773 to make up ground on the leaders and finish in fourth place with 6801 at the end of qualifying. Ghislaine van der Tol of the Netherlands is top seed on 6871, with Malaysia’s Sharon Koh in hot pursuit on 6858, 16 pins clear of Sun Hee Lee of Korea on 6842.

Play commences tomorrow at 9am local time when the top eight bowlers in the both divisions will bowl a matchplay format, with bonus points, to determine the cut to the top three men and women for the televised Grand Final.
