Australians Start Strong At Asian Youth Championships

17 countries throughout the Asian region have travelled to the city of Hong Kong, China for the 12th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships, and the Australians are right up near the top after Day 1 of competition on the long oil pattern.

Jason Belmonte from Orange in NSW is currently leading the boys division and Clair Johnston from Adelaide is in 3rd place of the girls division after Day 1 of competition.

Belmonte, who flew into Hong Kong after rolling a perfect game during the High Roller tournament in the USA, shot 1509 (ave 251.5) to lead by 44 pins over 2nd placed Chung Seung Wan from Korea (1465, 244.2 ave). Saudi Arabia's Bader A. Al-Sheikh is in 3rd currently with 1381 (230.2 ave).

Johnston, who last month dominated the Australian Youth Championships in Sydney, is currently in third place after shooting 1297 (216.2 ave), only 28 pins behind 2nd placed Choi Gui Hyun from Korea and only 40 pins behind leader Valerie Teo Hui Ying from Singapore.

The singles concludes today with another round of 6 games singles, this time on a short oil pattern.
