It doesn't say that covering the thumb hole with the palm isn't allowed, it says that it doesn't count as "Gripping". The guideline is actually to have the palm cover the thumb hole so that the unused Thumb Hole is drilled in the correct place where it should be.

Best thing to do is to go right back to the basics. Work on your fundamentals, once you have them down, your confidence should start to return.

I agree with Androooo, I did that with an old Storm Spit Fire, and it really smooths out the mid lane reaction, with a nice "urethane" like motion on the back end. Great if you throw with a lot of revs on drier lane conditions.
