    How to promote bowling?

I am sure Lynne has pumped the news out to all the appropriate places, it is a shame this hasn't been picked up through more mainstream channels, we have our most marketable bowler in the country, and quite possibly on the planet right in our own back yard (and whilst Jase has done a truckload...

    Its even tougher.

Correct me if I am wrong Tony, but are the first few tournaments of the year are played on the WTBA or sport patterns to help pick the national team, then the patterns are back to normal/easier conditions after that? I can understand this to a degree as these patterns are what are played on...

    2013 NSW OPEN MENS MASTERS

Dave, AFAIK, each state is supposed to have the championships on or around the same weekend, yes there was short notice with the forms coming out mid January, when in reality they should be out sometime Nov/Dec at the latest, but there aren't too many free weekends in the year to have two...

Hence why this system is in place so to speak, to give exposure to these patterns to at least prepare a little for when traveling OS. I think the problem is not always marrying the pattern to the centres conditions. As I have said for juniors and open bowlers alike, education is the key.

I think you will find the technical committee appointed by the TBA send out a range of patterns for a centre to choose from, it is then the centres, choice from I think maybe 3 patterns and that is what they lay. The TBA dictate that WTBA or similar patterns should be used, to match those...

    Its even tougher.

I obviously didn't bowl, so perhaps this makes me one of those non seniors sticking his nose in, but one thing that I can think of that comes to mind, if the Los Angeles was laid down at Keon Park, and unless Keon Park has had new lanes put in, any kind of angle from inside to out would result...

    Its even tougher.

Valid points Tony, I think I have alluded to something similar but in regards to juniors and the type of patterns they are playing on in some tournaments. I guess the guys that bowl Seniors can look at it a few ways, never going to please every body, but personally, I would envisage easier...

    NATIONAL TRAINING SQUAD

Jim, there is a set criteria to abide by, the team for international events can only be selected from the NTS, so yes this does not always mean the best players are chosen, but means an attempt to select the best from the squad is. This means that yes the system can be viewed as inflexible as...

Roto Grip Roto Grip Defiant Edge

Defiant Soul is nice, very predictable and smooth, covers a few more boards than the Lucid but the Soul I left box condition.

Roto Grip Roto Grip Defiant Edge

Nice work, not the biggest hooking ball, but the motion and drive from the break point is second to none, and on the lane conditions most centres set up, you don't need a big hooking ball.

Sportsmanship - what would you do?

The difference being, in most tennis matches we watch on TV, you are talking about high level players with similar skill level, in bowling, so many different levels of skill, why would it be expected to have one bowler apologetic because they bowl a few lucky shots, and where do you limit the...

    Roto Grip Wrecker

The Wrecker, the next in line from the pearlized Shatter. I was initially reserved about the Wrecker until I saw this was the hybrid coverstock version. I have always faired well with the hybrids, still really like my Rising Stars, (yes more than one). I have really liked the hybrid...

    Roto Grip Defiant Soul

The Defiant Soul is the third release in the Defiant range, following the original Defiant and the pearlized Edge. As I was hoping for, the Soul is a nice mix between the two. The original Defiant in box condition, gave a nice early read with a fairly reserved backend, the Edge was a...

Sportsmanship - what would you do?

Poor sport, unfortunately, that kind of thing happens all the time now. If the bloke genuinely thought he was bowling good shots and clearly wasn't, then you can understand being annoyed, however, unless there is some awesome sheep station waiting for you outside as a prize, hardly worth the...

    2012 SuperStrike Newcastle Cup

John, screw that, it is Christmas time. I agree, now the time of year is not so good, whereas once the tournament at Tuggeranong at the same time was attracting 120+ bowlers. Surprisingly, the two guys that had the most re entries, also re entered for this tournament. Must like throwing that...

    2012 SuperStrike Newcastle Cup

I think you have partially hit the nail on the head, tough pattern, time of year, now that nationals is a fairly high expense event, ppl are still recovering. The previous incarnation of the tournament was unpopular because it was held at Mayfield. This will be a different time next year, will...

    2012 SuperStrike Newcastle Cup

Wasn't referring to you John, a lack of local support from around the region let this tournament down.

    2012 SuperStrike Newcastle Cup

I was quite surprised to be honest, the pattern, combination of lane surface and oiling machine allowed for such diversity, but I think it ended up a good thing having a fair range of styles on show for the crowd.

    2012 SuperStrike Newcastle Cup

Nothing wrong with some lower scoring to give us all a reality check Jim ;) it was certainly a pattern that highlighted any flaws in your game, and the format also leant itself to the scores not being super high, at the end of the day it meant zip qualifying on top with highest pinfall.

    2012 SuperStrike Newcastle Cup

In some ways, advertising a pattern well in advance, shouldn't make a difference as to whether a bowler plays a tournament or not, having said that, it does give a basic guide to equipment possibly required and a base to play the right areas, but I think too much emphasis is placed on the...

    when to move

Depends on the type of 10s left, flat tens, means your ball is changing entry angle ever so slightly, this could be due to things like the breakpoint has shifted, the spot is either burnt out a little already or the oil has pushed down a little, personally if you are hitting the pocket flush, a...
