Junior bowlers from Queensland and New South Wales took the honours at the Junior Masters, the finale of the 42nd TBA Junior National Championship. Bowlers from every State and Territory have converged on Sydney during the past fortnight for the Nationals, hosted by Tenpin City bowling centre in Lidcombe.
In the Girls’ division, Katrina Carr from Carrara on the Gold Coast defeated fellow Queenslander Katey Furze in three games in Round 5 and then met the winner of the other Round 5 match, Cherbeau Webb from Rosemeadow. Katrina overcame the Campbelltown teenager in a four game match to win Gold.

It was a thrilling achievement for 18 year-old Carr who has been bowling for more than ten years. She was introduced to bowling at a birthday party, and now bowls regularly at both Robina and Ashmore centres. “It hasn’t really sunk in still,” she said on returning home following her win.
In the Boys division, 18 year-old Jake Cromie Warners Bay near Newcastle swept to an impressive win after defeating NSW bowler Dylan James in Round 5 and finishing strongly against Queensland’s Sean Bowling in the final match with an emphatic 662-508 score.

“They all say he’s a natural bowler,” his grandmother Kath Cromie said afterwards. “He gave up bowling for ten months last year when he got the plumbing apprenticeship, but he went down to watch the Sydney Cup with his coach Peter Zambelis and decided he wanted to get back into bowling. “Now he’s just excelling in that … Peter knew he could do it and Jake was very calm, but I was crying with joy,” she said proudly.
“Jake is gifted in several other sports, including swimming, but he loves bowling and I think it’s one of the best sports for children,” she said. “All the boys he beat came up and congratulated him and the friendliness and sportsmanship is just great. “The bowling world is a marvellous world– it’s a sport all kids should get into,” she added.
Organiser of the annual national Championship and the sport’s governing body, Tenpin Bowling Australia, has announced that the 43rd Australian Junior Championship will once again be held at the state-of-the-art Tenpin City bowling centre, from 13-27 April 2013.
