WOW!

Unfortunately the sport of tenpin bowling doesn't know such things like world records.

The FIQ/WTBA keeps championship records for World Championships and its three zones, Asia, America and Europe, keep the records for their continental championships. The United States Bowling Congress has the most complete data about bowling records in the world and the PBA lists all high scores of the professional bowlers since its inception in 1958.

However, Toni Laine (pictured left) from Turku, Finland, has accomplished a feat which could be considered a world record as we have never heard of anything close to it.

Laine established a new Finnish record for six games when he bowled in the final of the "Musta Pörssi" tournament on Friday evening, March 9th.

He started the series with back-to-back 300-games and failed to strike in second frame of game three. "That was the only shot which wasn't in the pocket during the whole six- game block," Laine said afterwards.

He left the 9-pin standings, spared it and ran off the sheet for 280 or 880 for the first three games, an average of 293.33.

He started game four with the front eight but a 10-pin in the ninth ended his bid for the third perfecto. Laine spared and struck out for 279 or 1159 after four games, an average of 289.75.

His sole "double" happened at the beginning of game five when Laine didn't strike in two consecutive frames. He left another 10-pin in frame one and even worse failed to convert the spare, the sole open in the whole series. He spared a 9-pin in frame two and closed out the game with eight consecutive strikes and a 9-pin spare for the low game of the series, 258, or 1417 after five games, an the average down to 283.40.

283 pins shy of the magic 1700, Laine started the final game with a 9-pin spare, which didn't make the task easier for him. The Finn remained cool and struck out for 290 or 1707 pins for six games, an average of 284.50.

Six games, 65 strikes, 5 spares and 1 open.

What an outstanding performance, no matter how easy the lanes have been.

"Many times when the lanes are easy, you loose your concentration and just throw the ball," Laine said. "This time I decided to focus on every frame as good as I can to get as much as I could.

"Of course it's not possible to make high scores like this, if the lanes are not very easy. But the carry was in any case unbelievable. The ball reaction was wonderful," he added.

And consider that Laine has used a brand new ball, an Ebonite Total NV, which he got just the day before. He has practiced about half an hour with it before he used it in the tournament.

"The feelings after having accomplished the feat were amazing, it's just unbelievable."
