Are you going to Nationals this year?

Yeah that's what I did, can't make it up there for the first week because of work committments, so I spoke to someone from TBA and they told me there'd be quite a number of bowlers doing the same thing so there shouldn't be any hassles.

"THS" Is it good for bowling?

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not fussed whether leagues are really walled up, if you don't want to bowl on walled up lanes, go and bowl in the leagues where they're not well maintained. Tournaments are a different story though, they should be difficult at that level, that's why they're...

Wow! That's a huge effort - well done Chris! :)

    Afl Finals

Cats = Still my pick. Pies = Playing good footy but their inaccuracy will bite them on the arse at some point, plus the grand final's not in October so they're stuffed. Saints = Dark horse. Could be great, could be sh*t. Unpredictable. Swans = No. Freo = No. Had a good year though. Dogs = No...

    Results - Tasmanian Masters

Thanks Gaz and John :) I wasn't expecting the win, but I'm certainly glad I got it! Hard to believe it's been 16 long years since I last won it, just hope I don't go through a drought like that again!! Thanks Garry and Kathy, Jack and Kace and the staff up in Lonnie for putting the tournament...

    Bowling is not stupid!

Probably some young bloke with the attention span of a two week old puppy. One thing I do agree with Aussie though, it (bowling) can be tedious to watch on the box if they aren't allowed to show a bit of character.

    Worst-kept centre in Australia

Devonport prior to Rick taking it over and renovating it and Moonah in the late 90's and early 2000's would be up there with Mt G as the worst. Both were shockers. Old age and old equipment, well worn, no money to fix them, they just needed a bit of TLC and a lotta coin spent on them. Both are...

First ball you bought / used

First ball I ever bought (or more to the point, my family bought me) was a Columbia Lite Dot, a light blue plastic ball. Was a ten or eleven pounder and I was given that when I was about 12 or something. Conventional grip too. Highest I averaged in a season with that was about 186 or 187 on the...

Best Leauge ever in your centre

Sponsors League - Wednesday nights at 6:30pm at Moonah during the 1980's and early to mid 90's was my all-time favourite. Fantastic league back in those days, the level of competition was absolutely amazing. It started in 1963 and really caught on during the late 1970's to have 24 x 5-person...

    Sliding pins.... What's the furthest?

I remember the worst timing for a pin to slide across the deck. Ellis Harris in the mid to late 90's in league at Moonah left the ring-10, the 6 pin clipped the 10 on its way around and sent it sliding perfect sideways into the 9 pin spot - for a 299! Also, speaking of pins bouncing out...

    Lane conditions at National events

Yes. I remember first seeing the Nu-Line Excalibur in use for the first time at President Shield at Kirwan in 1992. The whole NSW Central boys team were using them (I personally can't recall any of the other teams bowling with them) and the gear was way too strong for the burnt toast conditions...

    Just curious

I very rarely practice at all now. A couple of years ago, after the Sunday night league was finished, you could get games for $2.50 which was excellent value. I would bowl up to around fifteen games practice each Sunday night, often on multiple pairs to get myself "tournament fit" -...

    AMF Game Rates?

I don't think it is here Geoff. Anecdotally (I don't have exact figures) but I'd estimate that league numbers here are as low as they've ever been. I've been watching the numbers drop steadily over the past 15 years and from what I've noticed it's the lowest I've personally seen it and it's...

    How Far Is A Game?

All you need to do is strap a pedometer on to your belt and reset it prior to your first shot. Not sure how many steps equals meters/kilometers though. I know I clocked up over 55,000 steps in an 17 hour shift at work one day/night last year, no idea how far that is though.

    Highest Game to Game Difference

Can't remember what I've posted on this thread previously, so there might be a few repeats but some erratic back-to-back games that I recall over the years would be: Anthony Cox 118-279 in Sponsors League in about 1992/93 (161 the difference). He would've only been about 16 at the time...

    Synthetic V/S Wood.

I've never bowled on synthetic approaches and from what a lot of people have told me over the years, I think I'd stuff a pair of socks into the bowling bag if I had to or even grab a house shoe. You're spot on about the above quote too, back in the day I always found Devonport and Launceston's...

Is this the Japanese version of the bowling show

I've seen a tape with your father bowling in it, was about 1982 at the old Olympic Bowl in Canberra. I'm buggered if I can recall who has/had that tape either, Steve Lovell was on that show and was tearing the bejeezuz out of the racks, your dad and a bloke from here in Hobart named Eddie...

Is this the Japanese version of the bowling show

Oh I dunno about that Steve (re: a good memory) I seem to get as mixed up with my memories as anyone else these days I find, I knew about the Fast Lane thing because I taped it off the telly when it was shown here in about early '92, it's still on a tape around here somewhere, but it's on BETA...

Is this the Japanese version of the bowling show

Yeah, I'd agree with that. He was quality. Only heard him commentate once mind you, he was paired up with Tas-TV (now WIN) football and racing commentator Colin McNiff in the '91 Australian Masters from Moonah, won by Sue Cassell & Peter Van Kempen. That would be featured in 'The Fast Lane -...

whats the oldest bowl you have?

Couple of old AMF Strikeline's circa mid 70's and an old RAM houseball circa early to mid 60's from Asia. The RAM was a houseball at Mornington which I souvenired as a split shooting ball (I could throw it damn hard) when the place closed down nearly 20 years ago. Also got a Black Beauty which...

Closure of Mt Louisa Lanes (Currajong Superbowl) today

It was a backup centre for the '92 Junior Nats in Townsville (the main centre was Kirwan with the squash courts out the back). Really nice little place too that one, had a real homeliness to it that I liked. I remember bowling there in the Nationals, might have a been a doubles or a teams or...

    Bowling in Australia

Never really taken off in Australia? :-/ I take it you weren't around bowling in the 70's and 80's? It was huge. I agree with the rest of what you said though, and I think the sport's absolutely stuffed. AMF are one extremely big reason why the sport's gone so far backwards in this...
