England’s 2005 top-ranked bowler Dominic Barrett joined the list of Gold medallists at this week’s Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship with a record-breaking individual series during today’s Mixed Doubles event.

With a 1472 pinfall, the 20 year-old from Walton on the Naze in Essex claimed the previous record of 1461 set by England bowler Nick Froggatt at the inaugural Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship held in Scotland in 2002. Partner Fiona Banks won Gold yesterday in the Women’s Doubles event, and today’s win takes the English team to the top of the medal tally with three Gold.

Australia’s youth team duo of Tracey Madden and Glen Loader had to settle for Bronze with a 2611 score, just seven pins behind their team-mates Ann Maree Putney and George Frilingos, after another stellar performance by Ann Maree Putney from Newcastle. Putney punched out a 265 in Game 6 to overtake the hapless Canadian pair of Jonathan Simoneau and Jennifer Willis-Park, who finished on 2599.

The 265 game added another record to Putney’s achievements at this tournament, replacing her 257 mark set in Scotland in 2002 and delivering an identical final score today of 1309 to her Doubles partner, George Frilingos from Brisbane.

Outstanding averages in today’s Mixed Doubles event have elevated Dominic Barrett and Glen Loader to top four placings in the Men’s All Events – Dominic leading with a total pinfall of 3957, Frilingos in second position on 3880, Mohd Noer Said from Malaysia third on 3812 and Loader fourth on 3807.

Ann Maree Putney currently tops the Women’s All Events on 3814, with Canada’s Jennifer Willis-Park lying second on 3666 and Wendy Chai from Malaysia third on 3655, with the young England ladies Katie Jowsey and Fiona Banks in hot pursuit on 3615 and 3602 respectively.

Following tomorrow’s Mixed Teams of Four event, the field of 64 international representatives from 16 Commonwealth countries will be cut to the top 12 in each Division for the two-block Masters event on Friday and Saturday, culminating with a stepladder Final scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, 8 July.

Today’s exciting pin action was watched by a big crowd of spectators, including members of the TBA Junior Development Squad currently in camp in Melbourne as part of the sport’s national development program. Head Coach Cheryl Munson, recently awarded an OAM for her services to the sport, and Asian Bowling Federation Vice President, Sidney Tung, jointly presented the medals at this evening’s prize-giving ceremony.

Spectators are welcome at OzTenpin Bowl, Blackshaws Road, Altona North during the week of the Championship and admission is free.
