The 3rd Istanbul Bowling Open has attracted players from every continent to the bustling, beautiful city of Istanbul. Following six days of qualifying matches, bowlers from Austria, Finland, USA, Turkey, Germany, Australia, Israel, Denmark, The Netherlands, South Africa, Greece, England, Latvia, Poland, Kazakhstan and Hungary have now made the cut to the top 40.
Play will commence today at Istanbul’s Timeout Bowling Centre at 8am local time, with scores starting from scratch in Step 1 of the 4-game final matches. Pinfall will be carried forward in Steps 2 to 4 of the finals until the squad is cut to 4 for the two semi-finals, when the scores again revert to scratch.
Under the expert supervision of the respected Kegel Company, the lanes will be totally stripped and re-dressed before the final rounds, with the 2-game Final scheduled to commence at 6.15pm local time.
After five days of 6-game qualifying matches, Australia’s Jason Belmonte is currently in fourth place, after posting lines of 256, 214, 237, 210, 248 and 222 for a 231.17 average, just 50 pins behind the current leader Michael Loos of Austria. American pro-bowler Brian Voss lies in second place with a 234.33 average, with local bowler Habib Dogan from Turkey in third position, just 9 pins ahead of Belmonte going into the last day before the cut to the Finals qualifiers.
Following today’s squads, the field will be cut to the top 40, plus 5 bowlers from the 1-game “Desperado Squad”, with the Final matches fielding 5 players per pair of lanes in the initial stages of the 4-game Finals and scores starting from scratch. Further cuts to 32, then 16 and 8 will determine the semi-final line-up, with pinfall carried forward in all of the Finals matches.
