2008 Australian Youth Team

If i was confident enough in myself, i would be going down to roll off. If i made the team, i would do everything i can to find the money, and i would definately get the time of work and away from uni. Making the team to represent my country in my eyes is priceless.

Wayne, (this is Jarrod has signed in on my dad's computer)

If those were the coaches we were sending and that was there job i would have no problem with it. But we send ppl like who do a TBA course and get a certificate and then and work and coach part time...it is a hobby for most of these ppl as that what bowling is in the country. You can not be a professional in a Australia just purely bowling.

Like the bowlers the coaches and manager work and go away on the trips with the team if they are fortunate enough to be selected for the team. So why if these ppl get selected to represent Aust to be a manager or caoch..just like the bowlers are selected to represent their country that the players have to pay some stupid fee like $5500 to go and the manager and coach get a free ride......I maybe missing something but i just do not think it is right.

As i said b4 if the coaches and managers and bowlers were professionals like other country it is a different story. But we are not..if the bowlers have to pay (the reason the team is going) the support staff should have to kick in something as well to represent their country...it is then a even playing field. If it was a perfect world and bowling was going great in this country no one would have to pay..but one in all in

The secret to all of this is government funding. Why does Tenpin Bowling not receive significant government funding. Because it is not a high profile sport. We do not participate in the Olympics. How do we increase our support from the Government. We send teams to the World Championships and win medals.
Ok now the next question. How do we win medals. We send a team with the best available talent. That means Bowlers, Managers and Coaches. In that order. If we could afford Chris Batson, Sid Allen, or any of the many full time coaches to come out of Australia then great. But we cant. There fore we send a team that is capable of winning medals. I'm sure Sid Allen would agree with me (and no im not related) If you want to win medals you send the best bowlers you can, not the ones who can afford it. In all my time as a supporter and watcher of Tenpin Bowling in Australia i have never seen anything as ridicules as the Managers and Coaches getting a free ride.
(and that last sentence is a doosy considering some of the monumental stuff ups TBA have had over the years)
Come on TBA see the error of your ways and correct it before it is to late.
Phillip Allen

Gee, I thought Louise Eadie did 10/10 as a coach in both Mexico and China, and all the other International events she has coached at. Just because people coach overseas doesn't necessarily mean that what we have here isn't good enough. Our recent overseas results show that.

Edi

(By the way, I have total respect for the coaches who do go overseas, I just don't think we should consider those here as second choice).

Edi

At no time did i say that the coaches in Australia are not up to the job. Im sure that Louise did a fine job as have all the other coaches who have represented Australia overseas. Please read the post before assuming what has been said. Its a very easy scenario. Win medals and you give yourself a better chance of getting Government funding. With the current format of funding this trip i would hate to see our best bowlers sitting at home because they cant afford to go.

regards
Phil

(and before anybody reads between the lines im sure whoever does get selected will do their country proud and try their very best.)

We have some great coaches in this country & they shouldn't have to pay to be able to do what they do well -BUT in a perfect world the whole team would be sponsored & until this happens I don't think we will get the best team possible going overseas. It is nice to say that the experience is priceless & it IS true, but many bowlers (both young & old) have no possible way of finding $6000 +...even given 12 months notice. On the bright side maybe we are heading towards a point where full sponsorship might happen.....it is a telling time for TBA & they might be working towards a future for this sport ...I guess we just wait & see what happens in the years ahead.

Jarrod, i believe i have to disagree with this, purely because, while there ARE a lot of coaches out there who just do the course to have a peice of paper, and coach occasionally, you seem to be lumping every coach in Australia in this category, while I know that for one, my father lives, breathes, eats, sleeps bowling. almost every waking moment of his days are dedicated to bowling, including sundays. He spends so much time coaching the juniors, seniors, adults, even those annoying league bowlers that smell and no one likes to talk to, he spends so much time coaching these guys, that he doesnt even have time to coach me. the only time he gets purely to himself in a bowling alley in the hour and a half it takes him to bowl league every week.
also, i think maybe we should ask the coaches their oppinion on this, because i bet, given the chance, most of them would tell you that they dolnt expect a "free ride" because it is as much an honour for them to coach a world team as it is for us to bowl in one.
as for the camp, i will be attending. i fully agree with benny. this opportunity is the culmination of my past 10 yrs as a junior and youth bowler. it is a chance to prove to everyone, and myself, that i am good enough for this. 6000 is a lot, yes. but i am willing to plead, beg, scrounge, hell, i'd go without food for the next 3 months if it meant i could go. because this is what we do the sport for.

Jess,

I agree there are coaches that dedicate alot to the sport, and was not questioning the committment or the ability of the coaches,...however..the players have also dedicate alot of time, effort and money as well to get to a level to make their National team.

i just don't agree with some members of the team (managers and coaches) going for free and other members of the team (the bowlers) having to pay.

As i said in a perfect world it should be free for all...but when it is not the costs should be the same for all involved.

Also on the comments about making ur national team is priceless.....this to is also great if ppl have endless supply of money the feeling of wearing and competing in the green in gold is the best feeling u could ever have, HOWEVER......$6000 will take this opportunity away for bowlers...i for one i love bowling for my country but i could not justify $6000 with mortage and everyday living cost...

I think what we really need is for the TBA to have some serious discussions with the AIS. there is no reason that our sport is not on their programs, and i believe it would solve a lot of monitary problems the sport seems to be experiencing, even if it is only by having the sport recognised as such.

Jess,

I think your missing the point here.

Noone is denying how much work and effort coaches put into bowling on a day to day basis, what we are arguing about is what do they do for the FIQ team that is worth a free ride??

The bowler spend money, time and effort to compete and practice all year around (much like the effort your dad puts in to his coaching).
Bowlers then must take 2 weeks off work (losing more dollars) and then have to pay $6000 to play for our country.
On the other hand, if your old man gets selected to coach a national team, he would get a free ride.
He too would take 2 weeks off but its a small price than that of the player.

Its simple, no player/coach/manager is worth more to a team than each other, so the bill to go away MUST be shared evenly.

I love your dad, i think he is a great coach and he is always working on his coaching to help better the team and himself. BUT i dont care who the coach is, if im paying, so should he/she.
Jesus Christ himself could be selected to coach us, but if he is getting a free ride, I'm calling BULL$HIT!
OK maybe if the son of GOD is coaching us ill let it slide, but you get my point.

I think someone at the top of the chain here is forgetting that we are not PAID ATHLETES and even me (who makes a living out of bowling) will find it hard to find $6000......when i know if i booked the trip i bet i can knock it down to $3000.

Jess, I hope you do go to the camp, i hope you bowl great and earn enough points at the camp to get selected......I hope you bowl great O/S and make the $6000 worth it......but ill ask you the same question 5 years from now when you have paid over $20,000 to represent your country, like I have and then you find out that other people have not been paying !!!!!!!!!!

And just for the record.....If we are made to pay!

The players deserve some incentive to win...... Gold Medals should be full
reimbursement, silver 2/3rds and bronze 1/3 of the cost the player and COACH paid to go on the trip!

That way if we bowl great we get financial support too!

Well...................

I have been watching this thread very closely and everyone has very valid points and its great to see so many people so passionate about our sport.
When TBA had to cancel the Ladies World Champs in Aust it was a massive blow to the sport but it was something that TBA obviously thought needed to be done and their reasoning for that would have been well thought out and justified.
When TBA decided to make the trips overseas for Coaches and Managers free they would also have had to have reasoning for that as well.
But just as Ben & Jess & Krystal & Chris & a few others have said, to put that Green and Gold on is in MY opinion PRICELESS
I have a mortgage and i have car repayments and bills and the money i do have left to spend goes into practicing and league anyways but if i get given the chance to put the Green and Gold on again and if TBA puts a $6000- price tag on it then so be it, there is no way in this world that i will give up that chance.

The sentiment is great Bee but there are people out there who could Not find the $6000+ no matter how hard they tried or how much they starved...especially on such short notice.

i have to agree with belmo and Jez on this one. If one pays all should pay its simple. Yes the coaches and managers are there to support the bowlers, but its the bowlers who have to throw the ball.

I have been lucky to be an AUS rep on a few occasions and even luckier to win medals at the top level, but would i pay 6k to do it, with mortgage repaymenets, car payments, unstable economy, mmmmmmm i dont know

Seems that the Aus team will be made up of people who can afford it and perhaps not the best bowlers

Well, there's a problem, the TBA is broke.

Do we want to support the sport. Do we want to have our young bowlers represent Australia. Do they want to represent Australia. YES.

And, if you ask the bowlers, they will find the money. Your comments Matt totally dscredit the bowlers ability and professionalism.

These athletes are serious about their sport and make decisions to accommodate the costs. They go without the drinking, socialising and holidaying. They work more to cover their expenses.

They are great ambassadors for the sport and instead of snide remarks, one would hope that someone who has represented Australia, would be more supportive.

Leanne,

Its not often ill defend Matt :) but your missing the point!

How can you allow your son/daughter to pay full price and let support staff go for free??

$6000 for a once of fee is high but can be found, your right.....but what if your kids make both teams....youth and Adult.

Thats $12000 each for the year, now do that every 2 years for the next 6 years.....There are not many who could afford that!

If i had to pay $6000 once in my life to bowl for OZ I would do it in a heart beat, but its everytime I go away. Which again would not bother me as much if everyone who goes away is paying $6000.
But when 2 people who are traveling with me get everything paid for........Surely you can see that something is wrong there....

That's the problem!!!!

Belmo

PS- TBA cant be that broke if support staff are getting a free ride?????

Leanne

u have misunderstood what i have said

I am not discrediting the bowlers here, its about sending people away for free when other people have to pay

like belmo and jez have said who is more important to the team, NOBODY... everyone is equal and one thing that i have learned by bowling FIQ and Rachuig and Shield is that

There is no I in team

And if there is away or finding $6000 within a short period of time please let me know as i would love to know how
