Saturday 8th September 2007 - The 2007 Totalbowling Tenpin Bowling Carnival started today with capacity squads at AMF Craigie in Western Australia. With teams and individual bowlers traveling from around the nation to the 24 lane suburban Perth centre.

Some impressive scores have set the scene for the forthcoming Darrell Holt Restricted Challenge and the expected 4000 games over the 6 day event. Wayne Adams from Queensland came into the tournament with a 173 league average recorded a very nice 257 game during his doubles squad this afternoon. New to the game, Lynnae Rankine, from NSW (166 average) impressed with her All Events tally of 1952 (216 average) for her 9 games of singles, doubles and teams.

The highlight of the first day was the Welcome Tournament, which under the Holt Challenge Steering Committee guidance was renamed to the John Dobson Memorial Tournament. John Dobson sadly passed away in June 2007 and never got to witness the first Totalbowling Tenpin Bowling Carnival or Darrell Holt Restricted Challenge. However, he spent more than 30 voluntary years on the national tournament scene running and supporting bowler groups not too dissimilar to those represented here today at AMF Craigie. The Holt Challenge Steering Committee agreed unanimously to dedicate the Welcome Tournament to the memory of John Dobson and observed a minutes silence in recognition.

Traditional interstate rivalry was evident in John Dobson Memorial Tournament as the vocal chords got warmed up for the Darrell Holt Restricted Challenge. Twenty four 5 person teams filled the popular and oversubscribed event. Colin Hook set the scene for a very successful night for the Victorian teams with a starting game of 256 and 638 series to secure an individual trophy and $1000 winner’s purse for his team Holt Three Victoria. Consistency was the key and another Victorian team, Holt Four Victoria proved that this was all that was needed to wrap up second place and $700. High scratch game for the night was a 266 by Northern Territory’s Savvas Christodoulou. Men’s High Scratch Series was by Victorian Shariff Dasuki (671), one pin ahead of South Australia’s Ben Barlow. Ladies High Scratch Series was by NSW bowler Lynnae Rankine (659) and testament to her hard work and coaching from bowling legend John Leo.

Singles, Doubles and Teams squads continue through Sunday in the lead up to day one of the Darrell Holt Restricted Challenge on Monday.

Congrats on this committee in running this successful event and proving once again how behind the time TBA has become.
Begs to ask the question again ...do we really need TBA in its present expensive form.

However to the Peter Coburn and the Daryl Holt Committee, a lot of hard work with a fantastic result.Great effort and you should all be congratulated for the effort put in. Maybe you guys should take over the running of TBA.;)And it was only 12 months ago that some TBA official were saying that this event would not get the support from the bowlers thru-out the Nation........Boy did they back the wrong horse again.

My sincere congratulations to the organising committee of this event. The great turnout and apparent comraderie vindicates the view that if you provide national events for bowlers at all levels of proficiency the Sport of bowling will prosper. My best wishes to all for an exciting tournament
