$10,000 Sunraysia Tenpin Cup January 2012.

I agree, I don't see how almost 30 bowlers when all said and done, will have pulled out after initially saying they were bowling. A lot of last minute dropouts, everyone can't be washing their hair this weekend surely. You might expect a few dropouts due to last minute stuff, but 20-30 over the last week or so till now is almost laughable if so much wasn't at stake for these guys who have put so much hard work into this tournament.

Lets check off a few points but all seem positive in my eyes
- Biggest prize fund on current bowling circuit
- Tournament organisers who are interested in what we the bowlers want and listen (and unfortunately, have had to adapt in a not so positive way)
- Tournament organisers who are genuinely interested in just running a good tournament, showing the type of shot on offer via Youtube has rarely been done before
- Organising a truckload of sponsorship for this event, rare to get any sponsorship these days

Possible drawbacks
- Entry fee, although only marginally higher than most normal tournaments, 50-75 higher, or about 20-25%, but the payout over a normal tournament is approx 150-200% greater, so IMO this kind of makes up for it ;)
- Its in Mildura, but my understanding there is a good local scene, Melbourne and Adelaide are a few hours or so away, so there shouldn't be any excuse for those especially in SA not turning up to play if they are interested in tournaments (and whinge about lack of tournaments) and for that matter, how can they constantly get 30-50 bowlers for most Victorian sports series, but barely more than that for a normal tournament forgetting the cost argument? So the only real bowlers with excessive travel expenses are those jetting in from Brisbane and Sydney, but I bet these guys make up more than a 1/3 to 1/2 of the field.

Real drawbacks or negatives
- Haven't really seen one yet. It is a new tournament, trying to find a format bowlers like, trying its hardest to succeed based on what the tournament bowlers want. There are always going to be teething problems with new things, but these are the tournaments we as tournament bowlers should be supporting.

I agree wholeheartedly with the above sentiments.

The only down side I can see is that Friday is a working day, but the drop out rate for such a great event is very disappointing, especially for all the effort the guys have put in and the hurdles they have had placed in their way. Even though I am way past my prime I, for one, can't wait.

Consider this. In 1980, the major events around Australia paid around $2,000 for 1st place. 32 years later, there are only 2 event paying more than $3,000 for 1st, but the entry fees have skyrocketed. THIS IS THE SORT OF MONEY OUR MAJOR EVENTS SHOULD BE PAYING OUT ALL THE TIME! if they had kept up with inflation/cost of living etc. This gives you an idea of what Deano and Raymo have put together.

Yes, very disappointing for the guys that have put all the hard work in to get this tournament together. I know how disappointing it must be for them.

I agree Brenton, prize payouts have been similar since I started my journey into Adult tournaments, yet over the last 18 years, since my first tournie, the entry fees have doubled if not tripled. I don't mind this entry fee being a touch higher than normal, as I said, the payout is well over normal.

And with the Friday argument, I know people sometimes work shift work and public holidays and the like aren't taken into consideration for these workers, but if anyone as a tournament bowler was wanting to participate, they have had over 6 months notice this tournament was going to run and surely could have organised the Friday off to make it a longer weekend.

The only difference I see (cost aside) is the travel factor. Most of the VSS events are Melbourne based and due to this travel to these tourneys are in the order of an hour at most... for the majority at least who live in and around Melbourne. Travel to Mildura by road is, from Melbourne around 6hrs. It's about 6-7hrs from Geelong but I don't consider this an excuse to not bowl.

Other than that, I can't think of any other reason...

I for one is dissapointed to see so many people pull out at the last minute, Looking on the bright side i feel this tournament will once again be up and running this time next year and everyone will be itching to get a spot for next year.

Looking forward to the weekend. For all those that are able to make this awesome event, travel safe and look forward to bowling with you all on the weekend.

As for those that have pulled out recently due to travel/work/money issues... Put your annual leave forms in now for next year, book your flights and accomondation well in advance and save every single dollar you can, cos not only will this be one of the biggest tournamants of the year, its also one of the nicest regional towns in Victoria... So much to do and see here :) :)

Let's make sure everyone driving to Mildura gets there safely. Be careful on the roads leave early so you don't have to rush. More importantly don't forget to ring 1800 240 667 (Victorian travellers) to find out the latest CFA Fire information concerning your planned route. For those travelling from Melbourne checked today and Melbourne to Mildura looks good however will be checking in again in the morning as suggested by CFA to make sure. When on the road tune to the ABC to get regular updates.

Safe travelling and see you all in Mildura.

I am not sure if this is a main contributor to why people have pulled out but there is also a skins tournament in Wodonga on the same weekend which offers $1000 per skin.

I think it has cost the event a number of bowlers. Given Melbourne bowlers can make it up there and back and bowl in the event in the one day if you wanted to. Thus no accommodation costs just an extremely tired person arriving home. Hopefully for next year the events can run at different times allowing people to bowl in both.

This is what Bec is alluding to:

Well i look at it like this. We are $75 dollars dearer but have roughly $20,000 more prizemoney on offer. Anyway I just hope everyone travels to Mildura nice and safe and i will assure that you will have a great time. This is only our first year and yes we will be doing it all again next year better and a bit different.

As usual, lets put multiple tournaments on the same weekend & bugger up the numbers in both tournaments.

To be fair, the skins have been on for many years, but I would imagine it would be in everyones interests to have them on separate weekends from now on in. Until this tournament came up, I was heading down to the skins one.

fair enough, something to look at in the future...1 day tournament can be run any weekend i suppose.

Like I have said in a previous post under the Berri Riverland Cup. One thing that people havent yet mentioned is the lack of an entry form. Without an entry form. Bowlers dont get a clear view of what the format of the tournament is, costs, times, who the tournament sponsors are, etc, etc. Secondly, if there is no entry form. Then the tournament isn't out in centres being advertised so therefore the 90% of the bowling world that aren't on totalbowling won't know about the tourmant. Although us bowlers that know about the tournament can tell others, we don't bowl in every centre in the state every single day, therefore there is always going to be bowlers that we don't see or know of that may be interested. I think that centres themselves need to get out of the mind set of that if it doesn't happen in our centre then we won't advertise it. It should be something that centres within the state or nation wide should be look at working together and advertising what goes on in each centre when it comes to tournaments so that for bowlers who are interested in them know about the tournament(s).

I think that this tournament is coming up against the the same problem the SA Cup has in past years. There is the cairns open just before the Australia Day Long Weekend so people may not have the money or the time to take off work and then there is the weather which I think is a big factor for tournaments this time of year. Out of all the bowlers that have pulled out I can't say that it would be solely because of work committments. People should be old enough and smart enough to organise time off work. Out of the people that have said they aren't bowling that havent indicated work committments as being the reason, how many of those would have pulled out as it is going to be between 35 and 40 degrees in Mildura during the weekend??????? I would maybe suggest that for this tournament to run in a different time of the year as cooler conditions may attract more bowlers.

Just MHO.

Something I totally agree with. TB is only a very small part of the bowling community. There needs to be broader advertising of events.

David fair point. Just that it is a 3 day tournament and there are not many long weekends in the year. It quite easy to say put it at another time but when???? Labour Day weekend is Vic Country Cup, Easter is Australian Open, Labour Day is Melbourne Cup. Im up for any suggestions as ive said before. I want what the bowlers want. Much appreciated though for all the feedback.

Plus 35-40 degrees is beautiful. Bloody softies. lol. Its great drinking weather by the river. What more do people want. LOL
