Junior bowlers from across North Queensland will gather at Burdekin Bowl on the weekend of 1-3 July for the 2016 NQ Junior Championships.
Almost 100 players from as young as 7 up to the age of 18 will travel to Ayr from Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns to contest graded events for various averages and abilities in both Boy’s and Girl’s divisions.
Adding to the excitement of this popular tournament, this year’s Championship is one of nine major events on the State’s sporting calendar that form part of the recently announced SCOOT Junior & Youth Talent ID Pathway. Supported by award-winning airline, Scoot, the new Talent ID Pathway will culminate in the selection of a squad of 10 young bowlers, accompanied by four officials, to compete in the Milo International All-Stars Championship in Malaysia early December.
Amongst the competitors vying for glory in Burdekin next weekend, and possible inclusion in the Talent ID squad is defending Open Masters champion, Katherine Porter. 18 year-old Katherine Porter is a local bowler from Ayr who was part of the victorious North Queensland team in the female division of the President’s Shield Teams event at the Junior Nationals held in Sydney earlier this year.
Another defending champion is Chelsi Carr from the Cairns suburb of Edmonton who topped the Restricted Masters event at the 2015 NQ Championship – one of a large team of players making the journey from Cairns to Ayr.
Mackay teenager Blayne Tirendi, and Cairns bowlers Bailey Miller, Steele Field and Ben Nickles who represented North Queensland in the male President’s Shield team at the Nationals are some of the high-average male bowlers registered for the State Championships who will be seeking further success next weekend.
