Congratulations are pouring in for two young Australian bowlers who have achieved outstanding success overnight in the Youth divisions of the 2016 MILO INTERNATIONAL ALL-STARS CHAMPIONSHIP in Kuala Lumpur.

Attracting hundreds of young bowlers from almost ten countries, the 17th Milo International reached a thrilling climax as Brisbane's Blayne Fletcher won the title of Boys’ Youth Open Champion and Melbourne’s Rebekah Commane finished runner-up in the Girls’ Division.

Fletcher, a Queensland University of Technology student from North Lakes rolled an outstanding 233.6 average over the ten games in the Finals. As top seed, he then faced the winner of the first match of the stepladder final, Singapore bowler Joel Tan Eng An, and clinched victory in the grand final, 232-204. Malaysia’s Ahmad Aidil and Takuya Mazawa from Japan finished equal third. Fletcher is Australia’s top-ranked Youth bowler and has also qualified for today’s Adult Masters stepladder final.

Rebekah Commane, who won the Girls’ division of the 2016 Queensland Junior Cup in July, finished in fourth place following the 10-game Finals, and following a decisive win in the first match of the stepladder final advanced to the grand final which was ultimately won by Singapore’s Tracey See 262-182. 17 year-old Commane from Point Cook collected a handy 10,000 Malaysian Ringitts in prizemoney while Fletcher pocketed 25,000 Ringitts in addition to his title and trophy.

“A fantastic result by two very talented and hard-working athletes,” commented industry leader, Marisa Belmonte this morning. “We are super proud of you both, well done! The last Aussie to win this was 10 years ago when (our son) Jason Belmonte was crowned the 7th Milo International champion … now we have a second two-handed Australian bowling champion,” she added.

Blayne’s mother, Lyn Fletcher, proudly responded: “Jason is Blayne's biggest idol and he has followed him since he was a little boy, so to have his name on that floating trophy and in the record books alongside his hero means more to him than anything else.”

Blayne Fletcher is amongst a group of twelve Youth and Junior bowlers selected by the Tenpin Bowling Association of Queensland to travel to KL as part of its innovative Talent ID Pathway which is designed to provide valuable international competition experience to some of Queensland’s top emerging talent. Multi award–winning airline SCOOT added further impetus to this exciting programme by providing return flights from the Gold Coast to Singapore for the squad.
